Homeland season 4, episode 5, titled “About a Boy,” wasn’t Carrie’s best hour, but knowing our fearless leader, she’ll be able to save herself.
How did she end up making numerous mistakes that may’ve put one of her closest allies, Saul, in grave danger? Let’s recap Homeland season 4, episode 5.
We begin the morning after Carrie and Aayan’s romantic night together. Aayan is staring into Carrie’s sleeping eyes, in love with the night they just shared together. Apparently once wasn’t enough for him – he lifts the sheets and peeks at her naked body. “It’s okay,” she tells him when she catches him spying.
Saul catches up with Carrie before heading back to America, and lets us know he can’t imagine how Carrie will be able to gain Aayan’s trust in three days. Would he approve of Carrie sleeping with the boy? We doubt it, but that’s why grandpa doesn’t know.
Speaking of those moves Carrie put on Aayan… they don’t work. He tries to back out of Carrie’s (fake) plan again when she’s out for a little bit, so she gives Aayan another reality check about his chances of survival outside of the safe house.
At the airport that same day, Saul spots Fahrad making his way through security. He tries to call Carrie but she doesn’t answer.
Why? She’s interviewing Aayan and refusing to let him out of her sight. During their one-on-one, Carrie brings up “rumors” that Haqqani is alive, and Aayan throws a fit in defense. He can’t believe someone could suggest a thing.
Not making much progress, Carrie decides to “open up” to Aayan about her child and the boy’s father, who was supposedly a journalist killed in the line of duty. Carrie says Dad’s death was her fault (which is one comment during this speech that may actually be true). Aayan is happy to talk to Carrie about her issues, but we wonder if he’s at all suspicious why she’d bring this up. And despite his feelings earlier, he’s willing to hook up with Carrie again, but this time with him in the dominant position.
While all this is happening, Saul continues to track Fahrad, who’s looking awfully suspicious, in the airport. He appears to be heading to Johannesburg, according to the gate he’s standing in front of. Saul decides to call Quinn to fill him in.
Saul grows more and more concerned as he watches Fahrad go into a bathroom and meet with two men in there. Saul can’t take the stress any longer and decides to go to the bathroom to investigate, and when he does, one of Fahrad’s guys injects him with a drug to make him pass out. They escort him out of the airport. Fahrad calls Naseem (!) to tell her that the job is done.
Just as this happens, Quinn and Fara – who had set up shop near where Haqqani was spotted last episode – once again spot the terrorist stepping outside. He hops in a car, so Quinn and Fara begin following him. They want a drone to track him, but Carrie is, once again, nowhere to be found.
They reach a checkpoint, and Fara tries to get close enough to put a tracker on Haqqani’s vehicle. She can’t get close enough, so they’ve hit a dead end as far as following him goes. Meanwhile, in Haqqani’s trunk? SAUL! Carrie is really going to regret this one.
The next day Quinn decides to go over to Carrie’s safe house to chew her out in person for her two big mistakes (there’ll be three once they learn what happened to Saul). After yelling at one another, Quinn asks about what she’s up to with Aayan and tells her what viewers are thinking: She’s “fucking a child.”
Once back inside, Aayan decides to come clean about Haqqani. He’s very sick, Aayan says, so he’s been delivering medicine to his uncle. “He’s the only family I have left,” Aayan says. Uh oh. This isn’t getting any easier for Carrie.
Professor Boyd
Despite telling his wife that he’s staying in town after all, the Ambassador doesn’t feel any better about her relationship.
Later, after getting drunk and then overhearing his wife make comments about his worthlessness, Dennis decides to get his mission over with so he can move on. He breaks into Carrie’s apartment (is it really breaking in if he has a key?) and takes pictures of her meds.
What did you think of ‘Homeland’ season 4, episode 5?
The episode only had one big surprise – Saul’s capture – so we’re hoping next week the fireworks are turned up a bit. Carrie is certainly in a really bad position at this point. We can’t imagine how she’s going to get Aayan on her side.
