Hidden Figures, the best movie of the year, has surged past Oscar darling La La Land at the box office.
Of the nine Best Picture nominees at the 2017 Academy Awards, Theodore Melfi’s incredible biopic Hidden Figures is now officially in the lead at the box office.
IndieWire reports that after Super Bowl weekend, the SAG Award winner has earned a whooping $119.4 million, which puts it above La La Land‘s current $118 million total.
Not only is it great to see Hidden Figures so widely received, but since La La Land is tipped as favorite to win in most of its nominated categories, it gives some hope to those wishing to see a different result.
Based on a true story, Hidden Figures takes place in the 1960s and stars Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monáe and Octavia Spencer as three NASA employees whose contributions to the space race have gone overlooked for far too long.
The inspiring movie is nominated for a total of three Oscars, the other two being Best Adapted Screenplay and a Supporting Actress nod for Octavia Spencer. The Academy Awards take place February 26 and are hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
