Update (9/3/19) Looks like we’ll all be watching HBO’s Watchmen series this coming October!
Watchmen fans rejoice! HBO officially announced the premiere date for Damon Lindelof’s reimagining of Alan Moore’s iconic series.
On October 20th at 9/8c, Watchmen will premiere on HBO, ready to blow our minds and drop us into a newly remixed world of superheroes and supervillains.
The Watchmen TV series — described as a ‘remix’ of themes and storylines of the original Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons comic book series — is follows the events put forth in the comic book series but is set in an alternate universe version of 2019. This is a world in which Adrian Veidt’s actions were revealed by Rorschach’s journal, Dr. Manhattan lives on Mars and cops look an awful lot like the masked vigilantes that are currently outlawed.
The series follows Regina King’s Angela Abraham, a masked Tulsa detective known as Sister Knight, who is investigating a white supremacist group that targets police officers.
Make sure to catch the premiere for the show on October 20th on HBO!
Original Story (7/22/19) HBO’s Watchmen trailer features familiar characters, an army of Rorschachs and Regina King kicking a whole lot of ass.
Even though HBO’s Watchmen skipped out on San Diego Comic-Con this year, it still found a way to join in on the fun, bring the hype and get fans excited.
We’ve seen glimpses of the world created by LOST showrunner and co-creator Damon Lindelof — a world which takes its cues from Alan Moore’s graphic novel rather than Zack Snyder’s film, and which takes place long after the events of the Watchmen comic book series. Lindelof has long spoken about having no interest in ‘retreading, recreating, rebooting or reproducing’ what Alan Moore has done, and even hesitates to call the Watchmen series a direct sequel to the comic.
Instead, he’s referred to the Watchmen show as a ‘remix’ of the themes, ideas and storylines presented in Alan Moore’s iconic limited series comic.
After weeks of teasing the trailer on its Twitter account, HBO and Watchmen finally delivered with a three minute trailer, embedded below for your viewing pleasure.
While the trailer isn’t hasn’t given away too much of the plot, it does give us a better idea of the world of Watchmen and the major players within it.
While costumed vigilantes were outlawed by the government in the original series, here we see it is the government themselves — in the form of the police force — who now wear the masks and dole out the vigilante-esque type judgment. We’re treated to many a scene of Regina King dressed up in all her masked glory — both the standard police digs and a more customized suit — all while kicking a lot of ass and just generally being a badass.
And while we’ve long known that Adrien Veidt would be part of the new Watchmen adaptation, the trailer likewise offered us a look at former costumed heroes Laurie Juspeczyk — now Laurie Blake — aka Silk Spectre, Dr. Manhattan, who is apparently living on ‘fucking Mars,’ and even a glimpse at what could be Dan Dreiberg aka Nite Owl II.
The trailer builds on the world of the 1980’s Watchmen comic book series and we’re excited to see the modern-day story of Watchmen unfold on HBO in October!
