A live-action Peacemaker series starring John Cena is officially in the works over at HBO Max!
HBO Max announced on Wednesday (September 23) that it has officially picked up a brand new DC action comedy series revolving around Peacemaker.
The series is set to explore the origins of the character, who is a master of weapons and also happens to be featured in the highly anticipated Suicide Squad sequel (August 6, 2021).
Actor John Cena, who plays the character in the anti-hero film is set to reprise his role for the forthcoming HBO Max series, which has been given a straight to series order of eight episodes for its inaugural first season.
Also on board for the live-action series is James Gunn, who serves as writer and director on the second Suicide Squad movie. Gunn is set to writer all eight episodes of the Peacemaker series. In addition, he’ll also serve as director of the pilot episode, as well as a few others.
In a statement announcing the series, Gunn said: “Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into the current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag. I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series.”
Meanwhile, Cena also released a statement in which he expressed excitement over being able to continue working in The Suicide Squad universe.
“I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of The Suicide Squad and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie,” said Cena in a statement. “I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for Peacemaker. We can’t wait for fans to see this.”
In addition to writing and directing, Gunn will also serve as executive producer not he series alongside fellow The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran. John Cena will also serve as a co-executive producer on the project.
Currently, there’s no word on when we can expect the series to debut via HBO Max.
