HBO is officially bringing ‘Big Little Lies’ back for a 2nd season
HBO has some good news for all the Big Little Lies fans itching for more of the hit drama series.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO has officially renewed Big Little Lies for a second season!
Though the mini series was a runaway hit and an award show darling for HBO, the fate of the show was left a bit up in the air for quite some time. According to THR, the delay in giving Big Little Lies season 2 the green light was due largely in part to the network looking for the right person to helm the second season given that director Jean-Marc Vallee won’t be returning.
In addition to announcing season 2, HBO also revealed that Andrea Arnold will be taking over directing duties from Vallee. The Oscar winning director (who wrote and directed the winning short film, Wasp) will be serving as director for all seven episodes for season 2.
Arnold will be joined by screenwriter David E. Kelly, who is returning to write all seven scripts for the second season.
In a statement announcing the second season, HBO revealed that as the series progresses this time around, we’ll see the show “explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage, and of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode…the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom.”
As for the cast, the network also confirmed that both Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon will be returning to reprise their roles for the second season. Though no one else from season one has been officially confirmed, it’s expected that HBO will be finalizing negotiations soon to bring the rest of the cast on board for the second season.
