If you’ve ever wanted to obtain your very own Quaffle, Bludgers, and Golden Snitch, the new Harry Potter Collectible Quidditch Set may be just what you’re looking for.
Released by Running Press, the Collectible Quidditch Set is the first officially licensed Quidditch set and will make a cute display piece for casual collectors of Harry Potter memorabilia. The more serious collectors may want to wait for a true-to-film replica, but this one definitely has its merits.
It comes in a sturdy box with a plastic lock and set of keys. It wouldn’t stop someone who wanted to get the goods inside, but as it’s geared for kids as young as 14, it would keep nosy younger siblings out. The box’s ornamentation is detailed but flat, meaning the metal studs and old, worn look to the miniature chest is superficial. However, the Hogwarts house crests are a gorgeous addition, with all four being equally represented. The metal hinges are nice and strong, so you shouldn’t have any trouble with the box staying open on display.
Inside, along the top, you’ll find shields representing the four houses, which are made to look like they’ve been painted in. The stationary Golden Snitch is perhaps the most disappointing part of the set, as the Snitch is so representative of Harry Potter, both the series and the character. However, due to the overall scale of the set, it may be best that this part does not come loose, so it isn’t lost forever. The detail is ornate, which is definitely an added bonus, and I like that it looks as though the little doors have already been opened to reveal the Snitch behind them, just like in the movie.
In the center of the box sits the Quaffle and two Bludgers in a thick cardboard stand. All three of the balls are made of a heavy polyresin, which makes them hard, durable, and extremely realistic looking. The detail in the shape and indentations, as well as the worn leather look, definitely raises the overall quality of this set.
Every Harry Potter Potter fan would love a life-sized Quidditch set, but considering the potential cost for something like that, the Quaffle and Bludgers are a good size and make you feel like you’re just holding a miniature version of the real thing. (No wonder it looks like those Bludgers hurt so much when they hit.) I had some trouble removing the Bludgers from the display, but I also realize not everyone would want to do that. They can come out, though, with some careful maneuvering, and it’s nice to have the option.
Under the display is a 16″ x 24″ Quidditch poster, which has the Hogwarts castle, the Quidditch pitch, and a shot of Harry from Chamber of Secrets right before he gets hit with the Bludger. The poster quality is high, more plastic than paper, and will certainly look nice in a good frame.
Though most of the box is taken up by the display stand for the Quaffle and Bludgers, there is room to put pictures or notes at the bottom of the box. A photo of Oliver Wood surrounded by little pink hearts would not be out of the question here.
