Grey’s Anatomy fans won’t be happy to hear this news. Original cast member Justin Chambers has left the show!
Grey’s Anatomy, which is in its 16th season, doesn’t have that many original cast members left — and it’s already lost another one. According to Deadline Chambers, who plays Alex Karev, has decided to leave the show.
Chambers has been on Grey’s Anatomy since the pilot and his character has been critical to the show ever since then. “There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years,” Chambers stated.
Explaining why he’s decided to leave the show after so many years the actor said, “I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time.”
It doesn’t seem like there is any bad blood between Chambers and the rest of the Grey’s Anatomy family, thankfully. He also made a grateful comment towards them saying, “I want to thank the ABC family, Shonda Rimes, original cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens, and the rest of the amazing cast and crew, both past and present, and, of course, the fans for an extraordinary ride.”
This will probably leave many to wonder what this will mean for the other characters connected to Chambers on the show. Currently, Alex Karev is married to Jo Wilson (played by Camilla Luddington), who had recently struggled with depression. In the most recent episode, she had also brought an orphaned baby home with her without telling Alex!
There’s also the issue of Alex being in charge of the hospital where many of his friends work. Of course, this particular storyline could be fixed if everyone went back to working at Grey Sloan Memorial. We’ll just have to wait and see what the writers decide to do!
According to sources, his exit has already taken place. The series’ original stars who still remain are Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey), Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey), and James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber).
