Netflix announced that Grace and Frankie’s seventh season will be its last, officially making it the longest-running Netflix original series.
Get ready to say goodbye to Grace and Frankie.
Netflix announced yesterday that Grace and Frankie had been renewed for its seventh and final season.
That seventh season will have 16 episodes, giving the series a total of 94 episodes. That means that when Grace and Frankie ends its run on Netflix, it will officially be the longest-running Netflix original series.
Season 1 premiered in 2015 to high acclaim, with iconic actresses Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin playing unlikely allies who become fast friends during the course of their dual divorces — brought about by the fact that their husbands realize that they are in love with one another.
When asked about the ending of Grace and Frankie, showrunners Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris said it was “thrilling and somehow fitting that our show about the challenges, as well as the beauty and dignity of aging, will be the oldest show on Netflix.”
The first five seasons are currently streaming on Netflilx. The fifth season ended with Frankie returning to the beach house and the revelation that Grace had married Nick, played by Peter Gallagher. The sixth season wrapped production earlier this year and is set to premiere on the Netflix in January 2020.
Over the course of its ultimately 94-episode run, Grace and Frankie has garnered quite a few accolades. The show itself has been nominated for 11 Emmys, six Screen Actors Guild Awards and one Golden Globe nomination for Lily Tomlin.
Leads Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda released a joint statement about the end of the show, saying:
We are both delighted and heartbroken that Grace and Frankie will be back for its seventh, though final, season. We’re so grateful that our show has been able to deal with issues that have really connected to our grand generation. And their kids, and amazingly, their kids as well. We’ll miss these two old gals, Grace and Frankie, as much as many of their fans will, but we’ll still be around. We’ve outlasted so many things – just hope we don’t outlast the planet.
Both Tomlin and Fonda will return for the final two seasons, along with the rest of the cast — Sam Waterston, Martin Sheen, June Diane Raphael, Brooklyn Decker, Baron Vaughn and Ethan Embry.
A premiere date for season 7 has not yet been announced.
