Fans just have one more week to wait before the Gotham season 4 premiere, but first get ready with this recap on everything that went down last season!
Bounty Hunter Gordon:
When season 3 kicked off, there was a six month time jump. Fans got to see Gordon go visit Lee only to find her happily living with another man.
After that, Gordon returned to Gotham but he was a different man. Instead of wanting to do the right thing and find justice for the people, he ended up becoming a bounty hunter and only seemed to care about making some cash.
Later it was revealed that the man Lee was with was none of than Carmine Falcone’s son, Mario.
Mooney and the Indian Hill escapees:
With Mooney and the rest of the experiments from Indian Hill on the loose, people were very much on edge. Penguin also managed to rile up the citizens of Gotham even more, convincing them that this group was dangerous and needed to be caught.
But what they didn’t know was that Mooney was slowly dying from the experiments and was just hunting for a cure. Penguin actually got a chance to kill Mooney but let her go in the end.
Mad Hatter:
Jervis Tetch was introduced on the show when he worked at Barbara’s club as a hypnotist. It was quickly made clear that he used his skills for no good. His ultimate goal was to track down his sister Alice and even offered to pay Gordon for his services. But when Gordon did find Alice, she wanted nothing to do with Jervis.
It was revealed that Alice’s blood had the ability to do strange things to the people it came in contact with. Making them violent and crazy, but also really strong and powerful. Jervis wanted Alice’s blood but she would rather die than give herself over to him.
Penguin runs for Mayor:
After securing Nygma’s freedom from Arkham, Penguin joined forces with him to take over the city. With Nygma’s brains and Penguin’s newfound popularity with the citizens they were pretty much unstoppable.
The only problem seemed to be the tension between Butch and Nygma. Penguin ended up winning the election, and Nygma also began to take his place as the right hand man.
Ivy’s reborn:
After one of the Indian Hill escapees tried to kill Ivy, she ended up disappearing for a while. Instead of being killed by the man, he aged her just enough so that she was a beautiful young woman.
Her mind was still pretty child-like, but she had the curves to tempt rich men into doing whatever she wanted. She also got a kick out of talking with Selina without being recognized. Eventually she came clean to her friends about what happened and started to help them out with her talents.
Shakeups at the GCPD:
When Lee returned to Gotham she went back to work at the GCPD. But that wasn’t the only change that happened over the season.
Gordon also decided to go back to his old job as a detective after everything that happened with Alice and Jervis. What neither of them realized was that Barnes had been infected with Alice’s blood and was slowly starting to go crazy.
By the time they caught on, it was a little too late and Barnes was already going after people. When Barnes was sent to Arkham, Bullock took over the role of Captain again.
The wedding day:
Lee may have moved on and was ready to marry another man, but everyone around her was still consumed with her former relationship.
Including her husband to be, Mario, who got infected with Alice’s blood and couldn’t stop obsessing about his jealousy. Gordon, meanwhile, was onto Mario but couldn’t figure out how to prove that the doctor was guilty.
Gordon wasn’t able to stop the wedding from happening, but he did stop Mario from killing Lee. Unfortunately, he also killed Mario in the process before actually proving the man was infected. This brought a lot of hatred Gordon’s way.
Bruce steals from the Court of Owls:
Bruce decided to break his deal with the Court and investigate them even further. He discovered that there was a vault with something that the Court had been trying to kept hidden away, and decided to take it.
The Whisper Gang agreed to help, but then got killed off by the Court. So Bruce, Selina, and Alfred ended up on their own and nearly got killed for it. Until Selina’s mom made a surprise appearance and saved them. It was later revealed that Selina’s mom only came back for money.
All that Penguin and Nygma drama:
It’s hard to know where to begin with these two. Somewhere along the line, Penguin’s feelings of friendship towards Nygma morphed into feelings of romantic love.
When Nygma fell for Isabella, Penguin quickly became jealous and had no problem getting rid of her. Of course, Nygma figured out what happened and promised to get his revenge. He even ended up teaming up with his former enemies in order to take out Penguin.
Nygma’s plans all worked out and in the end he decided to take Penguin down to the docks and shoot him there. Penguin tried to convince Nygma that they needed each other and they understand each other better than anyone else. But it didn’t work and Nygma ended up shooting Penguin, watching coldly as he fell into the water.
Like everyone else in Gotham, Penguin doesn’t stay dead and is saved by Ivy.
Jerome returns:
After a cult like following for Jerome started to grow, one of the leaders named Dwight decided to try and bring Jerome back to life. With a little bit of Frankenstein-esque experimenting on Jerome’s body, Dwight came to realize that it wasn’t going to be so easy. So he ended up cutting Jerome’s face off and tried to assume his identity.
Too bad that Jerome woke up later, angry that his face was missing and went after Dwight. He took his face back, killed Dwight, and sent the whole city on a rampage with his followers taking over.
His next task was to kill Bruce, but with a little bit of trickery got talked into making it a big event which bought Bruce more time. Jerome and his followers had a crazy circus going on where they brought Bruce. In the end, Bruce got saved, Jerome’s face had seen better days, and he was brought back to Arkham.
Gordon learns the truth:
After being reunited with his uncle Frank, Gordon learned that his father was part of the Court of Owls and his death was no accident. The Court wanted Gordon to become a member, and Frank wanted Gordon’s help taking them down.
They started to run out of time as the Court revealed its master plan to use a weapon against the city, except that it wasn’t clear what the weapon was yet. When the Court figured out that Gordon was looking into their activities they demanded that Frank kill him. Instead Frank killed himself and set up Gordon to take his place on the Court.
Bruce gets kidnapped:
Using the cloned look-a-like “514A,” the Court had Bruce drugged and kidnapped while the clone took his place. Not even Alfred or Selina were immediately able to tell the difference.
Meanwhile, Bruce was held prisoner in the mountains with a Shaman that was intent on training him. He wanted Bruce to learn how to let go of all of his emotions in order to become more powerful.
After 514A attempted to kill Selina, his true identity was revealed. With Alfred finally up to speed on what was going on, he turned his attention to finding Bruce.
The Executioner:
It didn’t take long for the Court to figure out what Gordon was up to. They didn’t like that he was disloyal to them and decided to use Barnes as a weapon. They took advantage of his obsession with getting justice and turned him towards taking Gordon out — even giving Barnes a fancy new suit.
But, this decision came back to haunt the Court when Barnes ended up killing Kathryn. He didn’t care about doing the Court’s dirty work, he just wanted to fulfill his own obsessions.
Lee gets infected:
Still obsessed with her own guilts, Lee ended up having a dream about Mario where she drank his blood. Somehow this led her to decide to infect herself with Alice’s blood. Of course, the blood made her stronger right away.
Instead of going crazy for revenge, Lee ended up obsessed with getting Gordon to run away with her. Convinced that they could both find happiness with the virus from Alice’s blood she trapped him into taking it. But Gordon fought the affects of the virus as long as he could.
The Finale:
SO much went down in the finale that I’ll just remind you of the important stuff here.
Strange made an antidote for the virus, but everyone wanted to get their hands on him because of that, because having the cure now meant having all the power. Fish Mooney was back from the dead (again) and managed to get Strange before he could flee the city. Pegnuin, who decided to team up with Mooney, tortured Strange to get the information about the cure.
Bruce was back with Alfred, but basically still under the control of the Shaman’s lessons. Following the Shaman’s directions, Bruce went to find the demon’s head, and met Ra’s al Ghul, who wanted him to prove himself by killing Alfred. Bruce did actually stab Alfred, but then saved him so it kind of worked out.
There were also lots of deaths in the episode. Gordon killed Jervis Tetch, and Tabitha killed Barbara. Penguin also had Nygma frozen by Mr. Freeze as a kind of statue to forever remind him not to trust someone so much.
Gordon was also able to get a cure from Strange and save himself and Lee before it was too late.
Oh, and Bruce started to take on role of being the city’s protector — black suit and all.
