The Google Stadia announcement brought Nintendo and Sony stocks down a considerable amount, speaking to the power of the search engine company.
If you missed the Google Stadia announcement, Google announced on Tuesday their first major foray into the video game industry with a streaming console unlike any other. It will allow players to stream their games onto nearly any screen, ranging from phones and tablets to tvs and laptops.
Those features, amongst many other impressive technological flexes, apparently made investors think twice about their Nintendo and Sony stocks. After the Google Stadia announcement, Sony and Nintendo shares dropped by nearly 4%, according to Nintendo Life. In the age of the Switch and PS4’s massive successes, that’s sort of a big deal.
Google is touting a system that will be able to stream games within seconds with 4k visuals running at 60FPS. Those are fairly advanced specs for a console that relies solely on streaming for its gaming media. The Stream Connect feature will allow players to combine local streams, and also allow them to wait in a lobby to join a match while watching a YouTube stream of a game.
While Nintendo and Sony may be already feeling the effects of the Google Stadia announcement, they likely aren’t the only gaming-focused company to see the ripple effect of the Stadia hit their profits. With YouTube becoming a more and more popular platform for gamers to stream their video games, features like Stream Connect may just be what tips the scales in favor of YouTube over Amazon-owned Twitch for game streamers.
The barrier to entry for most companies to introduce a new gaming console is fairly high, with established names like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft running the gambit with their Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox brands, respectively. However, Google could just be the company to shake things up enough so as to sink another gaming company, ala the SEGA consoles of Christmases past.
The Google Stadia will release in late 2019.
