Who needs fairy tales when you can listen to the true stories of amazing women told by equally amazing women?
Francesca Cavallo and Elena Favilli’s Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls and Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls 2 feature 200 biographies of extraordinary women written like fairy tales. But they’re so much more than that. They’re inspiring bedtime stories of athletes, political leaders, and artists, not damsels in distress or women with evil step-mothers.
Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls was a Kickstarter success and now, after two volumes’ worth of stories, the authors are back with audiobook versions of these amazing tales.
And guess what?
The audiobook editions of Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls and Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls 2 officially went on sale today and we have an exclusive audio excerpt! Below is a taste of Hamilton‘s Phillipa Soo reading the chapter on tennis extraordinaires Serena & Venus Williams.
But first, we’re going to turn things over to the authors, Francesca Cavallo and Elena Favilli, to tell you a bit more about how the series (and audiobooks) came to be!
Francesca Cavallo and Elena Favilli on their ‘Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls’ series
Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls is the book we wish we had when we were children. We have often wondered what would have been like to grow up surrounded by more female role models, to read daily about women’s adventures, about their achievements, about the ways we shaped history. We felt a responsibility towards the next generation of women, and that’s why we wrote this book. The great thing that happened along the way is that so many different kinds of people chose to support our project in all sorts of ways. Our Kickstarter backers made our book series the most crowdfunded publishing project in history, and fellow artists, actors, activists joined us and formed a global movement.
We could not be prouder of the actors who agreed to narrate our stories in this audiobook: women’s voices matter. Being exposed to women’s voices can make a big difference in the way we all think about leadership and about the opportunities that we make available for women. The story of Venus and Serena Williams, that you’re going to listen to in this piece, is just a tiny example of how powerful women can be when they support each other, when they give space to each other’s stories, and when they use their voices to stand up for true equality.
