Harry! Did yah put yer name in the goblet of fiyah?! (And 10 other weird moments from ‘Goblet of Fire’)

"Did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire, Harry?" Dumbledore asked calmly.

We look back at Goblet of Fire, the fourth movie in the Harry Potter saga with fondness… and some bewilderment.

On November 18, 2005, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire hit cinemas. New classmates, new haircuts, and a new rage!Dumbledore — this was the movie (and book) that transitioned the Harry Potter series from the fun schoolkids’ adventure genre to legitimate young adult fiction.

It was also the movie where Neville came out as Hogwarts’ resident weed dealer…

There’s a lot to love about Goblet of Fire, especially after we’ve had 10 years to process our shock and surprise at Mike Newell’s surprising directing choices.

Here are the 10 weirdest scenes from Goblet of Fire that continue to delight and/or confuse us:

10. That time Ron and McGonagall had a thing

To whomever told Rupert Grint to grow his hair out ’70s style for this movie… we’re not sure whether to thank you or seriously question your fashion choices.

Shaggy-haired Ron had some great comic relief moments in Goblet of Fire (in lieu of meaningful dialogue), and perhaps his best and most random scene was this awkward dance with Professor McGonagall:

Don’t lie, Ron, you totally dug it. Maggie Smith is a babe.

9. That time Harry got naked

Remember, this was pre-Equus. Every single pre-pubescent (give or take a few decades) Potter fan was watching this scene very closely, despite it being totally icky and inappropriate considering the kid was meant to be 14 years old.

Since then, Dan Radcliffe hasn’t been able to stop taking his clothes off.

8. That time Hermione went through puberty

We love Hermione, but homegirl was almost as angry as Dumbledore in this movie.

7. That time Dumbledore went through puberty

What the hell, Dumbledore?! We’re gonna need to show that gif again.

Believe it or not though, rage!Dumbledore’s sporadic outbursts actually paled in comparison to…

6. That time Snape ACTUALLY ABUSED his students

We know Snape is a jerk, but however much this moment was played for comic relief, it doesn’t change the fact that he legitimately hit children.

And of course this trend would continue in Order of the Phoenix. Guess he learned from the best, eh Albus?

5. That time Hermione’s dress was the wrong color and the Internet exploded

“She was wearing robes made of a floaty, periwinkle-blue material, and she was holding herself differently, somehow – or maybe it was merely the absence of the twenty or so books she usually had slung over her back. She was also smiling – rather nervously, it was true – but the reduction in the size of her front teeth was more noticeable than ever; Harry couldn’t understand how he hadn’t spotted it before.”

4. That time Neville/Ginny was definitely more canon than JKR intended

In the book, Ginny went to the Yule Ball with Neville out of honor, and endured an evening of having him step on her toes, knowing that she could have gone with Harry but sucking it up like the awesome human being she is.

In the movie? Uhhh…

Movie Neville is a total hottie though, so we get it.

3. That time the fire nation attacked

What kind of magic do they do at Durmstrang, anyway? Staff magic? And what’s the Bulgarian word for No-Maj Muggle? So many questions.

2. That time David Tennant was in this movie (and you totally forgot about that, didn’t you?)

The Doctor was in Harry Potter. Be still our fandom hearts! Too bad he was all evil and Polyjuiced and stuff.

Also, what was with the tongue thing?

1. That time Voldemort created a monster

Yes yes, Cedric Diggory was a handsome Hufflepuff and we all cried when Peter Pettigrew killed him. Unfortunately, Cedric’s death was only the beginning.

This may have been the evilest thing Voldemort has ever done.

Bonus: That time Roger Davies stole the show

You didn’t think we’d forget, did you? See that stylin’ guy on the far right? That’s Fleur’s date, Ravenclaw chaser Roger Davies, trying to keep up with the Beauxbatons students’ awkward cheer routine. Look at him go!

And these are just a few of the many memorable moments from the cinematic masterpiece Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Draco turning into a ferret, Hagrid dancing with Madame Maxime, Cedric hitting on Harry, the unforgettable “I love magic” line… this movie was full of gems.
