Glee – Season 1 Episode and Song Guide

1×01 ‘Pilot’

Hoping to recreate his glory days, Spanish teacher and former Glee star Will Schuester decides to take over as director of the McKinley High Glee Club, which he dubs New Directions. The club is comprised of school misfits Rachel Berry, Mercedes Jones, Kurt Hummel, Artie Abrams, Tina Cohen-Chang, and – with the help of a little blackmail from Will – football star Finn Hudson. The club almost falls apart when Will steps down so that he can get a higher paying job to support his newly pregnant wife Terri, but Finn steps into the leadership role and rallies the team. 1×02 ‘Showmance’

Hoping to recruit more members to the Glee Club, Will arranges for New Directions to perform at a school assembly. The club members are worried that his out-of-date song choice will get them ridiculed, so Rachel comes up with the idea of performing “Push It” by Salt-n-Peppa. The students do indeed enjoy the performance, but there are several complaints from parents, which prompts Principle Figgins to give the Glee Club a list of preapproved songs they must choose from. Worried by the growing closeness between Rachel and Finn, Quinn Fabray, Finn’s girlfriend and head Cheerios cheerleader, auditions for New Directions along with fellow Cheerios Santana and Brittany. Cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester enlists Quinn’s help in taking the Glee Club down.

In the meantime, Will is forced to take a part-time job as a school janitor in an effort to support his growing family. The school guidance counsellor Emma Pillsbury has a crush on him and stays to help him when she sees what he is doing. Football coach, Ken Tanaka, warns her that she is playing a dangerous game flirting with a married man and asks her on a date, to which she agrees. When Terri discovers that she is not actually pregnant and instead experiencing an hysterical pregnancy she keeps the information a secret from Will and tells him he can quit the part-time job as a janitor.

While he is preoccupied with his new musical outlet, the Cheerios members who are a part of New Directions plot ways to bring down the group. They convince Rachel to seek out the help of renowned, and notoriously mean choreographer, Dakota Stanley. This plan backfires, however, when Rachel is able to convince the group that their differences are what makes them special and she fires Stanley. The Cheerios also try to sow discord by convincing Mercedes that Kurt has feelings for her. She is very hurt when he rejects her until he later apologizes and confesses that he is gay.

With Finn’s help, Kurt is able to “audition for the role of kicker” and he makes the team. Quinn tells Finn that she is pregnant with his baby even though they have never had sex. Finn confides in Puck who confronts Quinn with claims that the baby is his. When Terri learns of Quinn’s pregnancy, she hatches a plan to adopt Quinn’s baby and pass it off as her own. Finn asks Will to give the football team dance lessons in the hopes that it will help them improve. With the combined help of dance and Kurt’s kicking skills they are able to win their first football game, which also prompts football players Puck, Mike Chang, and Matt Rutherford to join New Directions. When talking to his father afterwards, Kurt comes out to him as gay and Burt surprises him by telling him he has always known and loves him the same.

In the meantime, Sue continues her plotting ways to bring down the Glee Club. She enlists the help of former Glee Club director, Sandy Ryerson, to direct the school musical of Cabaret, hoping to steal the club’s star, Rachel. In a desperate attempt to replace Rachel, Will recruits April Rhodes, one of his former classmates who never graduated, to return to McKinley where she can earn her final credits and join New Directions. April is a very talented singer who is also an alcoholic and a terrible influence on the kids. Finn decides to go for a music scholarship in order to support his unborn child and thinks the only way that will happen is if Rachel comes back to New Directions. He pretends to have romantic interest in her and it almost works, until she learns of Quinn’s pregnancy and realizes he was lying to her. With a drunk April at the helm, New Directions performs at the Invitationals assembly at the school and receive a standing ovation, but Will tells April she cannot perform the second number since she is drunk. Terri convinces Ken that he should propose to Emma who, reluctantly, accepts as she realizes there is no chance for her with Will. Quinn begins to realize how much pregnancy and, eventually, the baby are affecting her life, so she goes to see Terri and agrees to let her secretly adopt her baby. Terri is also visited by Finn who is complaining of exhaustion and she gives him pseudoephedrine. Finn shares the pills with the rest of the males in the Glee Club to give them an edge against the girls with their mash-up performance. When Kurt tells the girls what they did the girls get their own pills from Terri. Rachel and Finn begin to feel guilty over their actions and confess. Terri and her sister blackmail the Ob/Gyn into faking the ultrasound by showing the DVD of Quinn’s in order to keep up the ruse for Will. School reporter, Jacob Ben Israel, learns of Quinn’s pregnancy and threatens to run the story, but decides not to when Rachel agrees to give him a pair of her underwear.

Back in the choir room, Sue flexes her muscles as co-director and divides the kids between her and Will. She takes all the minority students and tries to convince them that Will discriminates against them. As the fighting between the two teachers escalates, the kids decide to stage a walkout. Abashed by their behavior, the two make up and Sue steps down as co-director. Ken’s jealousy over Emma’s obvious feelings for Will causes him to create extra football practices that are mandatory and also happen to conflict with Glee rehearsal. Finn and Quinn are faced with the reality that they are no longer top dogs in the school, which prompts Finn to choose football practice over Glee rehearsal while Puck, Mike, and Matt all choose Glee. Puck decides that he needs to date a Jewish girl, so he decides to ask out Rachel. The two have a very short lived relationship that ends when they realize they are seeking solace in each other for the feelings they have for Finn and Quinn. Puck helps sell all of the cupcakes when he bakes some with the added ingredient of cannabis. He offers the money to Quinn who is frustrated by Finn’s inability to help pay her medical bills. Quinn refuses the money and patches things up with Finn when he finally procures a job. Artie begins a relationship with Tina and tells her about the car accident that left him a paraplegic. The relationship soon ends, however, when he learns that she has been faking her stutter. Sue is forced to find a replacement for Quinn on the Cheerios. In an unusual display of compassion, she gives the spot to Becky Jackson, a student with Down Syndrome, and makes a donation to the school for new handicap ramps. It is later shown that she has an older sister named Jean who has Down Syndrome.

In the choir room, Rachel is given the traditional female song ‘Defying Gravity’, which upsets Kurt. His father complains to Figgins that it is discriminatory for Kurt to not even be allowed to audition for the solo. Will agrees to allow Kurt to compete against Rachel for the solo. Will puts the kids in pairs with the assignment of singing a ballad to each other. Due to the absence of Matt, Will is forced to pair up with Rachel who develops a crush on him. She apologizes to Will who assures her that she will find love one day.

Kurt and Finn are paired together and, on Kurt’s advice, Finn sings his ballad to his unborn baby. When his mother Carole catches him singing to a sonogram she figures out that Quinn is pregnant and assures Finn of her support. Finn then decides to tell Quinn’s parents when he goes over for dinner. Quinn’s father grows angry at the news and orders Quinn out of the house. With nowhere to go, Carole allows her to stay with them. Puck becomes frustrated with his inability to help Quinn and he lets slip to Mercedes that he is the real father. Will and the New Directions are intimidated when they see the girls perform using what Rachel dubs ‘hairography’ to cover up their less than wonderful vocals. Still worried, Will decides to use hairography and acquires wigs for New Directions. To prove that they were not showing favoritism, Will invites the other school they will be competing against, the Haverbrook School for the Deaf, to come by. During their performance, Will realizes that hairography isn’t working and decides not to use it after all. With the New Directions set list taking shape, Sue calls the directors of the other two schools to a private meeting and lets them know what songs New Directions are planning on performing.

Quinn has second thoughts about giving her baby up for adoption. Terri arranges for her to babysit her sister’s extremely unruly children in the hopes that she will decide to stick with the plan. The group nominates Finn and Rachel, but Finn backs out after he is teased for his involvement in the club. Rachel convinces a local mattress company to hire the club to star in a commercial they are filming, hoping that the celebrity status will help their reputation. Will finds out that Terri’s pregnancy was an hysterical pregnancy and that she has been faking it ever since. He walks out on her and sleeps on one of the mattresses that had been sent to the school as a thanks to the kids for doing the commercial. Sue informs Will that the receipt of the mattresses as payment renders the Glee Club ineligible for competition as they are no longer amateurs. The day before the competition Rachel finds out that Puck is the real father of Quinn’s baby and tells Finn. Finn confronts them both about it and, when he learns it’s true, he quits the glee club. When New Directions arrives at Sectionals, with Jacob Ben Israel along as Finn’s replacement, they are appalled to discover that the other two choirs are performing their set list. Emma calls Will in a panic and he convinces Finn to step up and be the team leader he was meant to be. Finn returns to the group with new music and pulls them together. With the song Finn brought, an old one they have performed before, and Rachel pulling a ballad she already knows from her repertoire, they have a new set list and a crowd pleasing performance. The director of the Jane Addams School for Girls has a change of heart and goes to confess to the judges that Sue leaked the New Directions set list to her and the other school director before the competition, but it is too late. The judges have already made their decision and declare New Directions the winners.

Will arrives at Emma’s wedding only to discover that Ken has called it off due to her lingering feelings for Will. Emma tells Will that she is leaving the school because she can’t stand the pain of seeing him and Ken at work every day. Back at the school, Sue gets suspended for her actions and the kids show Will their trophy, telling him how much he means to them. During their separation, Rachel meets Jesse St. James, lead singer of rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline, and the two begin dating. The rest of the club finds out and tells her she must break up with him because they believe he is using her to spy on them. Rachel instead tells Jesse that they must keep their relationship a secret and turns Finn down when he wants to get back together.

Will and Emma have also started dating, but Emma’s issues with OCD have kept them from becoming intimate with one another and she confesses that she is still a virgin. Will goes by Carmel High School, home of Vocal Adrenaline, to speak with director Shelby Corcoran. In the end, Finn is the only one who goes through with it, though he tells Rachel that he did not and Rachel tells him that she did. Jesse transfers to McKinley so that he and Rachel can be closer to one another, but the rest of the club members are suspicious of his true motives. She and Will end up sharing a bed that night, though they do not have sex, and in the morning she agrees that she needs to end the relationship with the tycoon. As the Cheerios prepare for an assembly, Sue tells Mercedes that she needs to lose weight. Mercedes goes to extremes in her dieting and passes out at school. Quinn offers Mercedes her support and tells her that she has always admired the confidence Mercedes has had in herself. The glee club is finally able to get the auditorium back when April’s tycoon passes away and she receives a large sum of “hush money” from his widow, which she uses to buy the auditorium.

Several of the glee club members are upset by their low ranking or the fact that they were left off entirely, so they engage in various antics they hope will increase their ranking. Rachel takes things a step too far when she creates a music video with Jesse, Finn, and Puck all cast as her boyfriend without telling them that they were part of a triple-casting. All three boys become very angry when they discover the truth and Jesse ends up breaking up with her because of it.

Sue informs Emma of the make-out session Will had with Shelby as well as the sleep over he had with April. Under Sue’s encouragement, Emma publicly denounces Will in the teacher’s lounge, leaving him mortified. Will apologizes to Emma and offers her flowers. When looking for clues on who she might be, Jesse slips a cassette tape into a box that is labeled as a message from Rachel’s mother, but she is not ready to listen to it.
