‘Gilmore Girls’ revival: Melissa McCarthy says she hasn’t been invited back

Melissa McCarthy is one busy woman in Hollywood these days, but can she make a quick trip to Stars Hollow and pay homage to Gilmore Girls‘ Sookie St. James?

Update (February 2): McCarthy was asked by a fan if she’d come back to Gilmore Girls in light of the below interview with Amy Sherman-Palladino, and the actress revealed that she hadn’t been asked yet. Awkward.

It’s possible that Melissa’s reps haven’t told the actress yet about the offer Amy Sherman-Palladino speaks of in the below interview. Or maybe Amy received incorrect information. Regardless, we hope Melissa does receive an offer, hears about it, and decides to return for the Netflix revival.

Original story (February 1): Before Bridesmaids, Tammy, Spy, and Ghostbusters, Melissa McCarthy spent many years cooking and staring at Luke fix her Viking stove on Gilmore Girls. McCarthy’s character, Sookie, was Lorelai’s best friend, partner in business, and all-around lovable presence in the community. But now that the actress is enjoying her well-deserved time in the public eye, her schedule is hard to clear for a reunion shoot.

“She’s really f—ing busy,” says Amy Sherman-Palladino to TV Line. But do not fear, the offer is out there for McCarthy to keep an eye on. Palladino says she approached McCarthy’s team and said, “Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I’ll write her a scene. Melissa was one of us. If she has a spare moment to run over [to the set] — even if for just a cameo — we would be totally game. And if it’s a last-minute thing, I would write her in and we would figure it out.”

Even if McCarthy cannot make it to set, the team behind the revival has a Plan B. “It was a character we knew we could not count on in terms of story, because [Melissa] just simply wouldn’t have that sort of time to carve out for us,” says Sherman-Palladino. While we would LOVE to see Sookie and Lorelai take a stroll around town, check in guests at the Dragonfly Inn, we understand if things do not pan out in our favor.”

But just in case, here are some ideas to explain her absence/offer a way to get McCarthy in for an afternoon shoot!

? Sookie is now a judge on an elite international baking show. She swings by Stars Hollow for a tour of “the place where it all began” segment.

? Due to some big development deal, Jackson sold his land for a ton of money and the family moved out into the country to expand his farm. Sookie moves away in the opening episode.

? Sookie’s children, Davey and Martha, became child stars after appearing in one of Taylor’s commercials. They now live closer to New York to accommodate their busy schedules.

Gilmore Girls begins shooting this week in Los Angeles. Check back here as more news breaks!
