George RR Martin, author of the Song of Ice and Fire series, has signed a development deal with the network that has brought his labyrinthine novels to the small screen.
Fans of George RR Martin may be pleased to hear that the venerable fantasy author has completed something new – but save the celebrations, because it isn’t The Winds of Winter. Deadline reports that Martin has recently signed a two-year overall deal with HBO. The contract extends his tenure as co-executive producer of the hit show Game of Thrones, which is based off of A Song of Ice and Fire, Martin’s series of epic fantasy novels.
In addition to this, the deal attaches Martin to the development and production of unspecified new series projects for HBO. While an exciting creative opportunity for Martin (who spent many years as a writer for television on The Twilight Zone and other series), the news may inspire a degree of anxiety in fans of the author’s literary work. In addition to his work on Game of Thrones (of which he writes an episode per season), his magnum opus, A Song of Ice and Fire, is still two scheduled books short of completion. Martin is currently working on the sixth installment, The Winds of Winter, and is simultaneously penning the companion volume, The World of Ice and Fire.
No specific information on the subjects Martin will develop has been released, though major fansite Westeros suggests that the material may be inspired by some of the other literature in Martin’s considerable body of work in the science fiction, fantasy, and horror genres.
But in the meanwhile, fans of both the novels and the television show can return to the world of Westeros when the third season of Game of Thrones premieres on HBO on March 31.
