It isn’t often that games can wow us like Rain does. Check out the amazing first gameplay for yourself to see what we’re talking about.

Rain allows the player to take control of an invisible boy whose silhouette can only be seen in rainfall. The main character must run away from glowering wolf-like creatures by taking solace in covered areas where rain doesn’t reveal him.

The setting of Rain seems to always be in London-esque rainy streets in the early night. The footsteps of the main character on the puddle-ridden cobblestone streets echo out with the loneliness that he seeks to escape from.

In what plays out to be a cat and mouse fright fest, the first gameplay footage of Rain shows the boy’s first discovery of the wolf creatures. He witnesses a girl silhouette similar to himself run under a storefront’s roof, garnering him the abilities to escape the devious animals.

The subtle details in the production of this game are what makes Rain stand out from the rest. One of the most emotional parts in the gameplay for us was when Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” tinkles over the introduction. Simple text is displayed in a 3D fashion, giving the player the feeling that they are climbing on rainy boxes and rooftops with the boy.

The concept of Rain is described in an elegant fashion by the game’s developers. “When you got lost as a child you felt alone, anxious and scared,” the developers explain. “But at the same time you felt something else… the excitement and curiosity of an unfamiliar place. Rain is trying to evoke the exact same feelings; the fear and curiosity of an unfamiliar world.”

It looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun to sneak through alleyways and under streetlights to find the way back home for the boy. We can’t wait to get our hands on this digital release!

Rain is being developed for the PlayStation Network, and will release sometime in 2013 (most likely before the PlayStation 4’s release).

Will you be following Rain as it develops? Or do you not see the gameplay as being elevated above titles from PSN?
