Game of Thrones fans will have to wait longer than we originally expected before season 8 premieres on HBO.
According to TV Line, the series’ eighth and final season likely won’t be hitting television screens until sometime in 2019.
Evidence to support the theory that Game of Thrones season 8 won’t be premiering for a few years comes from none other than Liam Cunningham himself.
The actor who plays Ser Davos Seaworth on the hit fantasy series recently hinted in an interview that the production time for the final season is set to be longer than any other that’s preceded it.
So what’s the deal with the longer production schedule? According to Cunningham, it all comes down to longer episodes.
“When you think about it, up until last season we’d have six months to do 10 episodes, so we’re [doing] way more than that for six episodes,” Cunningham told TV Line. “So that obviously will translate into longer episodes.”
Between the longer filming schedule, and the tedious amount of post-production we’re sure will be needed to bring all those special effects to life, it makes sense that we’ll have to wait a bit longer before we can experience the final chapter of Game of Thrones.
Currently, the cast of Game of Thrones is gearing up to travel to Belfast where they’ll hold the first table read for season 8 this weekend. Filming is set to commence not long after that and is slated to wrap sometime next summer.
As sad as we are to hear that we’ll have to wait two years before we get new episodes of Game of Thrones, we’re hoping the extra production time will mean the series can deliver one of its most epic seasons yet!
