Looking to lock down any and all Game of Thrones season 7 spoilers, HBO is once again not handing out any screeners to media.
Hypable requested screeners last week and was turned down. Entertainment Weekly was told this week that no GOT season 7 screeners will be going out to any media.
HBO typically offers screeners for all of their scripted dramas — we use them to prepare content for shows like Girls, The Leftovers, Big Little Lies, etc. But unlike these shows, Game of Thrones is in a unique position where HBO doesn’t have to care about giving the press access. The media has to cover Game of Thrones whether the show hands over screeners or not due to its incredible popularity.
The cabler stopped giving out Thrones screeners after leaks of seasons past. Plus, it’s more important than ever that the show’s secrets stay under lock and key. Now that the show is far beyond George R.R. Martin’s published works, readers have no clue what’s coming next.
Still, it’s frustrating for the press. Screeners help sites like Hypable prepare content in advance so they’re not rushing out reactions (speed matters in this day and age!). They’re also helpful because there are a billion shows to cover, and we can’t watch ’em all live.
Game of Thrones season 7 will be seen by all on Sunday, July 16.
