According to the showrunners, Game of Thrones season 7 may be delayed to allow for the arrival of suitably depressing weather.
Speaking on the podcast UFC Unfiltered, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss implied that Game of Thrones season 7 may air later than expected. Though winter has come to Westeros, it just left the northern hemisphere of boring old planet Earth, where most of HBO’s epic fantasy series is filmed.
Game of Thrones ordinarily films in the summer months, but according to Benioff and Weiss, production is “starting a bit later, because at the end of this season, ‘Winter is here’ — and that means that sunny weather doesn’t really serve our purposes any more.”
The showrunners suggest that the long-awaited arrival of Winter means it won’t just be the North that is affected by the cold. “We kind of pushed everything down the line, so we could get some grim, gray weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot,” they say.
This suggests that most, if not all, of the varied locations seen on Game of Thrones season 7 will apparently be suffering the attentions of the oncoming Winter. Cersei has already brought ashes to King’s Landing; it seems that snow is soon to follow. And it will definitely be nice to see the eternally vengeful Ellaria Sand has something to shiver about.
With the delayed start of production, Benioff and Weiss confirm that there is currently no scheduled air date for Game of Thrones season 7. That season, and the presumed eighth season, will most likely be shorter than the usual 10 episodes, only heightening fan anticipation.
Contrary to the “Winter is Coming” motto, the series typically begins in March or April. But it seems possible that fans will have to wait until winter returns to enjoy the final act of Game of Thrones.
