Feast your eyes on the first image of Mark Gatiss – yes, the Sherlock Mark Gatiss – as a banker from Braavos on Game of Thrones.
If you were deaf to the harmonies of fandom convergence when the surprise casting was first announced in July, you are probably hearing them now. Zap2It has revealed the first official image of Sherlock‘s Mark Gatiss in his hirsute and austere role on Game of Thrones season 4, episode 5.
Feast your eyes on the first look at the bearded bloke right here:
Gatiss will be playing Tycho Nestoris, a banker from the Free City of Braavos. The Iron Bank of Braavos has already been name-dropped more than once on this season of Game of Thrones; in last week’s episode, Tywin Lannister himself admitted that the infamous institution can be neither reasoned with nor bribed. As the saying goes, “The Iron Bank will have its due.”
But it will not be House Lannister with whom Tycho Nestoris will meet next week on Game of Thrones season 4, episode 5. Rather, Stannis Baratheon – the perpetually-aspiring rightful heir to the Iron Throne – will meet with the bearded banker to secure a loan. Stannis presumably means to purchase sellswords to promote his cause with the gold he acquires from the Braavosi bankers.
Gatiss, a writer on Doctor Who who also co-created and stars on the BBC’s Sherlock as Mycroft Holmes, has been coy on his casting ever since it was revealed. Kept a secret until last September, Gatiss would only say that he was “absolutely chuffed” to appear on the epic fantasy drama. “It’s a great show.”
Game of Thrones season 4, episode 5, “The Laws of Gods and Men,” will air on Sunday, May 11 at 9:00 p.m. on HBO.
