Is Valentine’s Day not your thing? Check out these movies that celebrate friendship.
In Parks and Recreation, Leslie Knope created Galentine’s Day. It occurs the day before Valentine’s Day, celebrating female friendships. Some of these movies are female-centric, some are bromances, and some are just plain friends. So, no matter which friendship you choose to celebrate today, here is something for you to watch.
‘Bridesmaids’
Yes, Bridesmaids revolves around a wedding, but that is not what the movie is really about. Bridesmaids is about the misadventures of and tensions in a group of the titular bridesmaids. This movie wonderfully provides a variety of female friendships. Some are complicated, some are strange, and some are well meaning. It accurately captures female humans as flawed. Bridesmaids does not gloss them over to have cute imperfections, but shows what it actually is like to have struggles in life. It breaks tropes of standard romantic-comedies through this, but also showing that friendship takes effort, but will be fulfilling and worthwhile in the end.
’50/50′
In 50/50, Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is diagnosed with a spinal cancer, with a 50% chance of survival. This begins to start affecting his relationships. While his mom is over-worried and his girlfriend is uncomfortable, his best friend, Kyle (Seth Rogen) stands by him the entire time. At times Kyle may seem a little insensitive, only doing what he thinks is best for Adam. However, he always keeps Adam’s best interest in mind and is always there to support him.
‘Kings of Summer’
In Kings of Summer, three teenagers run away from home to live in the woods. They have no survival experience, having lived in comfortable suburban lives. Yet, they feel like it would be better to live in the woods, instead of stay with their over-bearing parents. Because of this, they need to rely on each other to make it in the woods. When each of them contributes their skills they are able to have fun. However, once they begin to lose trust in each other, their plan falls apart. Their crushes and family start to come between them, but eventually they realize that their friendship makes them stronger.
‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’
In Perks of Being a Wallflower, Charlie (Logan Lerman) has difficulties trying to find his place in high school. That is, until he meets Sam (Emma Watson) and Patrick (Ezra Miller). They are older than he is, and much more adventurous, and they decide to bring him into their friend group. The friends may not all have the healthiest relationships, but when Charlie needs it, someone is there to support him. Charlie grows as a person by learning from his friends, who enhance his high school experience.
‘Thelma and Louise’
Best friends Thelma (Geena Davis) and Louise (Susan Sarandon) decide to go on a road trip to briefly escape their mundane lives. However, the road trip takes an unexpected turn when Louise shoots a rapist. The two continue on the run from the police, escalating their criminal activities in order to survive. No matter what happens during this adventure, they always have each other’s back. When there is no one else they can trust, their friendship becomes stronger. Although they make mistakes and learn the other’s darkest secrets they learn that they should not let anything come in between their friendship.
