Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton intend to return for ‘9 to 5’ sequel
There’s a sequel to the hit 1980 comedy 9 to 5 in the works and they’re hoping to reunite the original cast for the next chapter of the story!
It’s no secret that there’s a sequel to 9 to 5 in the works. In fact, we first got wind of a sequel earlier this year when we heard that Rashida Jones and original screenwriter Patricia Resnick had both signed on to pen the script for the upcoming 20th Century Fox film.
Now, we’re hearing that actresses Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton, all of whom starred in the original movie will hopefully be returning for the sequel.
News of the iconic actresses’ involvement came straight from Fonda herself, who is in fact serving as an executive producer on the project.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Fonda was in attendance at an event on Wednesday (July 25) morning to promote an upcoming HBO documentary about her life. There, she told reporters that there are currently plans in the works to bring the three iconic Hollywood stars back for the next installment.
“My role is as an executive producer, and I’m working with the writers, with Lily, and talking to the writers,” said Fonda of the 9 to 5 sequel. “Right now, Dolly, Lily and I are all intending to be in it.”
The original film centers on three secretaries who hatch a plan to get revenge on their sexist boss by abducting him and then running the business themselves. Though released in the ’80s, the comedy brings up some issues that are quite timely to conversations we’re still having today, including harassment, misogyny, and much more.
While Fonda didn’t give too much away with regards to what the plot of the sequel might entail, she did let slip that one of the things the sequel could explore is how “technology and corporate voyeurism” have changed dynamics in the work place.
“I’m sorry to say the situation is worse today,” continued Fonda when asked about show she’s seen situations in the workplace change since the first film came out. “Today a lot of the workforce is hired by an outside company. Who do you talk to if you have a problem?”
It’s clear that there’s no shortage of inspiration to pull for when it comes to a sequel. With that in mind we’ll be looking forward to seeing where Jones, Resnick, Fonda, and the rest of the team take things as the film moves further and further into production.
