The live performance version of the Phoebe Waller-Bridge comedy, Fleabag, will be available to stream on Amazon as a way to support a variety of charities.
Before Fleabag was an award-winning television show, it began as a one-woman show starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013. Waller-Bridge then adapted that one-woman show to the BBC/Amazon show in 2016 and it ran for two seasons.
In 2019, Phoebe Waller-Bridge revived the theatre production. The Vicky Jones-directed show played to sold out theaters at the Wyndham Theatre and Off Broadway, and was screened in U.K. cinemas as part of the National Theatre NT Live program last September.
According to Deadline, a recording of that 2019 theatre production of Fleabag from London’s Wyndham’s Theatre will be made available to stream in the UK and Ireland via Soho Theatre’s On Demand streaming site starting today, Monday April 6.
It will then be expanded to the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Canada starting Friday, April 10, when it will debut on Amazon Prime Video.
The Fleabag live performance be available to download on April 10 for two days on Amazon in the U.S. and the U.K. for $5, the proceeds of which will go towards U.K. charities, including The National Emergencies Trust, NHS Charities Together and Acting For Others.
As well as the newly launched Fleabag Support Fund, which will distribute grants of $3,067 (£2500) to freelancers working in the U.K. theatre industry, who are affected by the coronavirus crisis. The organization in the U.S. that will benefit from the money raised will be announced soon.
“I hope this filmed performance of Fleabag can help raise money while providing a little theatrical entertainment in these isolated times,” Phoebe Waller-Bridge said in a statement. “Thank you to all our partners and to the creative team who have waived their royalties from this production to raise money for such vital causes in this unbelievably challenging situation. All money raised will support the people throughout our society who are fighting for us on the frontlines and those financially devastated by the crisis, including those in the theatre community. Thank you in advance to those who donate. Now go get into bed with Fleabag! It’s for charity! Px”
