Look, I’ve been trying really hard to think positive about Fifty Shades of Grey. I’ve been promising readers that I would tone down the attitude in my articles about it, but then things like the soundtrack happen and I can’t help but complain (a bit) about it.
Today we learned the artists and songs that make up the soundtrack to the Fifty Shades of Grey film. There’s no doubt: There are some great artists on here! Freakin’ Beyoncé has two remixes on the soundtrack – both of which we’ve already heard in the trailers – and today we’re learning that Sia has contributed a new song titled “Salted Wound”. I’m sure it’s great!
But there are two songs on here that are making me feel upset. Sorry, I can’t help it. For some reason the people who represent the late Frank Sinatra have agreed to give Fifty Shades of Grey a song called “Witchcraft”. And then there’s a song by AWOLNATION called “I’m on Fire”. This is not their song… it’s a cover of a Bruce Springsteen song. These two contributions seem out of place given the stature of the artists and who they typically appeal to.
Here’s the full Fifty Shades soundtrack line up:
1) Annie Lennox: “I Put a Spell On You”
2) Laura Welsh: “Undiscovered”
3) The Weeknd: “Earned It”
4) Jessie Ware: “Meet Me in the Middle”
5) Ellie Goulding: “Love Me Like You Do”
6) Beyoncé: “Haunted” (Michael Diamond Remix)
7) Sia: “Salted Wound”
8) The Rolling Stones: “Beast of Burden”
9) AWOLNATION: “I’m on Fire”
10) Beyoncé: “Crazy in Love (2014 Remix)”
11) Frank Sinatra: “Witchcraft”
12) Vaults: “Where You Belong”
13) Skylar Grey: “I Know You”
14) Danny Elfman: “Anna and Christian”
15) Danny Elfman: “Did That Hurt?”
It’s cool that two of Elfman’s songs, obviously from the film’s score, were added to the soundtrack. These two might be scores that you’ll want to listen to again and again, if the fact that they’re on the soundtrack is any indication.
Here’s Sinatra’s “Witchcraft”. The lyrics of the song are certainly appropriate:
There’s no doubt that this is an interesting line up, and we’ll definitely give the album a listen from start to finish when it drops on February 10 (which is three days before the film opens in theaters).
By the way: In case anyone thinks I’m out to always attack the film, let me be the first to say that I’m legitimately excited to see it.
