Whether due to censorship or a character design choice, the latest studio comments on the FF VII Remake aren’t a good look.
Tifa will have smaller breasts in the FF VII Remake than she did in the original Final Fantasy 7, and Square Enix has explained the change within some fuzzy parameters.
Tetsuya Nomura, the director of FF VII Remake, had the following to say on Tifa’s character design: “It was necessary to restrict her chest,” for if the development team didn’t “restrict” her breasts, it would look “unnatural” during combat scenes.
Square Enix later clarified to Polygon that the character redesign had more to do with the game’s ESRB rating.
“In the Square Enix Japan studios, the Ethics Department is actually a group within the company that evaluates game content to make sure it is aligned with the anticipated age ratings standards across the globe (CERO, ESRB, PEGI, etc). In this case, we want a new generation of gamers to experience Final Fantasy VII Remake and are working very closely with the company’s internal experts to make sure all of the game’s content is appropriate.”
It’s an off comment to make, as the size of a woman’s breasts in a video game need not define the sexual nature of the game’s content. Square Enix also added in a sports bra to ensure that Tifa’s breasts would be more “restricted.”
Square Enix’s partnership with Disney on Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep yielded similar results in the Western release of the 2010 PSP game. Aqua, one of the game’s three Keyblade wielders, wears a top with a somewhat revealing back. However, for the game’s Western release, Square Enix both added more fabric to the back of Aqua’s costume, and reduced the physics of her chest.
The FF VII Remake was recently given a 2020 release date. The action RPG game will launch as a PlayStation 4 exclusive.
