Wonder Woman has shattered box office records and surpassed critical expectations to become the DCEU’s highest domestic grossing – and highest rated – movie of all time. With Batgirl and Gotham City Sirens already confirmed, here are our suggestions of female superheroes who also deserve their own big screen debut.
Kate Kane as Batwoman
Originally created as a love interest for Batman, DC has thankfully retconned Batwoman’s origin and character in order to make her something more than just another one of Bruce Wayne’s many lady loves. The current storyline places her as Bruce Wayne’s cousin and — in case anyone had any creepy incest storylines in mind — a lesbian.
With a background in the military, detective skills to rival the caped crusader himself and as one of DC comics most high profile lesbian character, Kate Kane would be a fantastic female superhero to add into the DCEU’s expanding universe.
Kara Zor-El as Power Girl
Audiences are already familiar with Kara — played with chipper perfection by Melissa Benoist — from the CW’s Supergirl. However, Power Girl is not quite the Kara we all know and love — instead, she is from an alternate universe and is aged up from the Supergirl version.
Powergirl is a more mature, self-assured character than the younger Supergirl, even taking on the name of Powergirl in order to set herself apart from her famous cousin.
She’s also just as powerful as Superman — in certain storylines, not even possessing the same weakness to kryptonite — and is a highly successful business executive when not beating supervillians into a pulp.
While being an alternate universe version of Kara Zor-El definitely has the potential to be confusing, it’s also a way to differentiate this big screen version from the CW tv version.
Zatanna Zatara
As a magician, Zatanna can bring in the supernatural side to the DCEU much in the same way the Dr. Strange did for the MCU. In the comics she’s one of the most powerful magicians in the DC universe, able to do everything from rebuilding Metropolis from complete destruction to erasing the memories of various supervillains and superheroes.
She likewise has ties to other major characters in the DC universe — most notably Batman, whom she knew as a child and helped to train in the arts of illusion and escape.
Her inclusion in the DCEU could also be a perfect way to set up the already scheduled yet permanently stuck in director-less limbo Justice League Dark movie.
Helena Bertinelli as The Huntress
The Huntress is unique in that she is one of the rare female anti-heroes in the DC universe. As the daughter of a mafia boss, she witnesses the murder of her entire family at the hands of a competing mob family.
This traumatic upbringing makes her more prone towards murder and hardline vengeance than most of her fellow heroes – especially at first.
However, while she is initially a rather unpredictable lone wolf, Helena eventually mellows out a bit and actually becomes a member of both the Justice League and Birds of Prey.
Dinah Lance as Black Canary
Another character that audiences will likely be familiar with thanks to the CW, Black Canary has a long history of kicking ass and being badass. The current Rebirth iteration has her fighting supervillains by night and, probably also by night, the lead singer of an all-girl band named — what else — Black Canary.
One of the major reasons I’d love to see her in the DCEU is that if we already had a Huntress and Batgirl film, then it’d only be a matter of time before we got a Birds of Prey movie — which would be one of the most exciting things for me to see on the big screen.
Because the only thing better than a female superhero film is a female superhero team-up film.
