Ellen Pompeo has been on Grey’s Anatomy since the first season, but in a recent interview, Pompeo teased she might soon leave the show.
Grey’s Anatomy has been on the air since 2005, and the medical drama has captivated audiences ever since. Though the show has gone through a large number of cast changes over the years, one individual has always been a constant: Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey.
However, in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pompeo hinted that she might be reaching the end of her time at the Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital. In late 2017, Pompeo signed a new contract for Grey’s Anatomy that made her the highest paid dramatic actress on television, but that contract only takes Pompeo through season 16.
While Pompeo didn’t say anything for certain about her future beyond season 16 on Grey’s Anatomy, she did hint that she might be ready to say goodbye to the show for good when her contract ends.
As Pompeo explained to EW, “I’m clearly not prepared right now to make any formal announcement about my future on the show. That’s something that Shonda Rhimes and I will do together. But I’m feeling like we have told the majority of the stories that we can tell.”
Pompeo went on to explain that she was very excited to work with the show’s new executive producer, Krista Vernoff. Vernoff began on Grey’s Anatomy back in 2005 as supervising producer, and Pompeo explained that it “felt right” to finish out the show working with Vernoff again.
We’ll have to wait for an official announcement on both Pompeo’s future on the show and if Grey’s Anatomy will continue after Pompeo leaves. While it’s hard to imagine prime-time television without the drama that has been around for over a decade, we’re glad to hear that everyone involved on the show is committed to telling good, engaging stories, and wrapping up the series (whenever that day might come) well.
The 15th season of Grey’s Anatomy premieres on September 27 on ABC.
