Times were tough in the 1920s for those who were gay. For Downton Abbey series 4 character Thomas Barrow, that means he still won’t find love in the new season.
“I can’t see it on the horizons, to be honest,” actor Rob James-Collier said to E! Online in a recent interview. “He’s been unlucky in love. I mean, when you go around kissing men while they’re asleep you’re not going to get a positive response…You can’t go around doing that. It’s not the way to strike up a relationship. Take him on a few dates at least.”
The actor did bring up a valid point. “If Thomas did find love, he’d probably be in a jail cell.”
Elsewhere in the brief interview James-Collier said that Thomas will find a new person to make trouble around Downton with following the departure of Miss O’Brien. The actress behind the character, Siobhan Finneran, decided to leave the show following the series 3 finale.
“He goes through a few [new partners], but he gets one eventually. Whether he lasts, we’ll have to see,” James-Collier said. By the way this quote is phrased, it looks like the “evil partner” replacing Miss O’Brien is a male.
Downton Abbey series 4 is due to premiere by the end of this year. The cast are currently filming in England. The beginning of series 4 will pick up with the characters coping from the loss of Matthew as Lady Mary begins to raise their newborn child.
Perhaps a relationship with someone would help Thomas become a more likable person amongst the rest of the Downton staff. It’s a shame we may never see that side of him because of the road blocks in the way of him finding love.
Thanks, E! Online.
