The beloved holiday classic, The Nutcracker, gets an updated look in the trailer for Disney’s upcoming, live-action film, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.
It’s a holiday tradition for many of us to see or take part in a production of Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet, The Nutcracker. The whimsical ballet is based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffman called The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, and tells of a young girl who goes on an amazing adventure into a magical land.

The ballet is fun and lighthearted, but has largely stayed the same for years. So when Disney released their first trailer for The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, it was exciting to see a totally new take on a classic tale.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is based more on the darker, Hoffman tale than the whimsical Tchiakovsky ballet. The film tells the story of Clara (Mackenzie Foy), who follows a string into another world where she is introduced to the Sugar Plum Fairy (Keira Knightley) who serves the Land of Flowers, Land of Snowflakes, and Land of Sweets.
However, there is much more to this world than beauty, magic, and whimsy. Clara must take charge of her own destiny, find a way to overthrow an evil ruler, Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), in order to save the Four Realms, and ultimately find her way home.
This adventure definitely sounds like an exciting twist on a beloved classic, but if you’re afraid you’ll miss the ballet dancing too much, take heart. The amazing Misty Copeland will be in the film as “The Ballerina” to represent the story’s beloved, ballet roots.
The film hits theaters on November 2, 2018, so get ready for adventure next holiday season!
