The newest Maze Runner photo from Wes Ball features the towering maze.
Although Thomas and Chuck are included in the new Maze Runner still, the featured character in this image is without a doubt the maze itself.
‘That’s just the way it is. Things are really weird around here, and most of us don’t know everything. Half of everything.’
Ball captioned this image with “What’s out there?” A quote taken directly from the first Maze Runner book. As Chuck explains to Thomas for the first time exactly what the maze is and how it works, his older friend questions him as to what exists on the other side of the barrier.
If following chronologically to the book, this is likely the East Door of the maze. Where Chuck describes how the the massive slabs of wall slide together each evening to lock the Gladers in and the Grievers out.
The stone walls not only house the characters of the book, they are a part of the very foundation of the first novel. They act as an important set element but more importantly they will inevitably frame the movie and highlight the tone of the entire film. Constructing the entire environment and world in which the young boys live.
It could easily be said that visual conception of the Maze Runner walls was as important of a decision as the casting choice for lead character, Thomas. And lucky for us, it seems as though Wes Ball and company took this challenge to heart. They’re making sure the look and feel of the film leaves a lasting impression just as the novel did for its readers.
