Actress and MMA fighter Gina Carano will co-star with Ryan Reynolds in the film adaptation of Deadpool. The film will focus on the character’s origins, and will have other X-Men cameos.
Fox has been looking at actress to co-star with Ryan Reynolds in their very unique Deadpool adaptation, and now Carano has landed the female lead. The deal is done according to THR, and while her acting experience is light, Carano’s performance in Steven Soderbergh’s movie Haywire was praised for its realistic fight sequences.
Carano will play a character known as Angel Dust, but so far it’s unclear how she’ll be fitting into the storyline. The actress had a role in 2013’s Fast & Furious 6, where she also kicked some major tail. Production is set to begin in March, where they’ll be shooting in Vancouver.
Director Tim Miller is set to helm Deadpool, with Ryan Reynolds set to reprise his role as the film’s hilarious and deadly mutant. Reynolds played the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and while that film wasn’t well received, the leaked footage of Deadpool was adored by fans online.
Deadpool, whose real name is Wade Wilson, is a mercenary with loads of mutant abilities. He was given the ability of many mutants in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which included Wolverine’s ability to heal instantly. With the story reportedly going back to the beginning, it’s unclear what specific abilities Deadpool will have.
The character’s origins in the film have been much different than in the comic, so it’ll be interesting to find out where they decide to take the character. The report also suggests that actor T.J. Miller will have a supporting role in the film, and bring comic relief, although we don’t know that this film will need any.
It was also announced that the X-Men character known as Colossus will appear in Deadpool as well, which should give X-Men fans another reason to see this film. Deadpool hits theaters February 12, 2016.
