Dawson’s Creek almost existed without one of its most iconic components: the opening credits sequence.
It’s the 20th anniversary of Dawson’s Creek, and EW is reporting on some juicy details from the show’s run.
One of the most interesting details that has come out is that the casual, fun style of the Dawson’s Creek opening credits sequence was far from planned. In fact, the creators of the show almost entirely forgot to film an opening sequence.
Kevin Williamson told EW, “I remember that halfway through the shoot we realized we needed an opening credits montage and I went, ‘Oh, well, we should shoot something.'” They found a broken Bolex camera in the back of the Director of Photography’s truck and decided to use that to accomplish the job.
“I went around with that sort of broken camera and I filmed all the kids just walking around the beach. I got them in my rental car and I drove them around Wilmington, North Carolina, and we just filmed them moving around and let the film run out.”
Once set to the tune of “I Don’t Want to Wait,” by Paula Cole, this of course became one of the most iconic sets of opening credits ever. Check out the opening credits sequence here for a bit of nostalgia.
