New images from Daredevil season 2 introduce Frank Castle and Elektra, and tease significant bonds developing in Matt Murdock’s personal and professional lives.
The images, from Entertainment Weekly, make it clear that things are changing for the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen in Daredevil season 2. The first image displays a standoff between Matt and the Punisher — except that Matt isn’t doing much standing.
Right away, it’s clear that Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle — a ruthless, but disciplined vigilante — is going to offer a challenge for both Daredevil and his fans.
“Viewers watching the show will be rooting for this guy with a gun,” says Doug Petrie, co-showrunner of Daredevil season 2 along with Marco Ramirez. “But we’re also going to force people — the way we force Matt — to second-guess themselves.”
A first look at Elektra (played by Elodie Yung) was also unveiled today:
Daredevil‘s first season presented a violent side of modern problems like engineered gentrification; according to Petrie, the second season will tackle a more inherently brutal subject matter.
“Taking lethal justice into your own hands in America in 2015 is tricky shit,” he says. “We have not shied away from the rich complicated reality of Now. If you’ve got a gun and you’re not the police, you’re going to incite strong feelings. We’re stirring the pot and we’re aware of the headlines where we live and we’re trying to get people to think.”
Frank Castle certainly presents many parallels to Matt Murdock, who is by no means a angel of mercy. But, Ramirez says, The Punisher “has a different moral code” that inspires him to act in quite different ways. “Matt is a devout Catholic — and you rarely see a character who’s a devotee anything on TV,” he says. “Frank has Hammurabi’s Code. It’s like letting a great white shark into the water.”
Speaking of things in the water — by which we mean ships — the second image from Daredevil season 2 suggests that Matt and Karen Page will be growing closer in the upcoming season.
But with the promise of more sexual content also comes the introduction of Elodie Yung as Elektra, Matt’s college girlfriend — who has a few secrets of her own.
“She’s just the best bad girlfriend you can possibly have,” Petrie says. “She does everything wrong and attractive, she’s his id, the wild side. Matt is always taming his wild side. Elektra just lets it out. He’s both repulsed and deeply drawn to that.”
Between his romantic entanglements and the dangerous challenges presented by Frank Castle, it looks like Matt Murdock is in for something of a rollercoaster ride in Daredevil season 2. And that’s exactly what the showrunners had in mind. “We hit the ground running,” Petrie says. “And then we ran as fast as we fucking could.”
Daredevil season 2 will be available for streaming next year on Netflix.
