The CW has found its Batwoman in actress Javicia Leslie.
Fans of The CW’s Batwoman were left stunned recently over the news that the series’ star, Ruby Rose had decided not to return in the titular role for the show’s second season.
Luckily for fans of the series, Rose’s decision to walk away from the project did not spell the end for the show. Instead, showrunner Caroline Dries executive producer Greg Berlanti, along with the series other creatives got together to hash out a plan to continue on without Rose in tow.
In the end, it was decided that instead of recasting the character of Kate Kane, the show would instead create a new character to take up the mantle of Batwoman.
Enter, Jacivia Leslie, who in addition to scoring the coveted leading role on the hit CW series, has now also become the first Black actress to play Batwoman in a live-action TV or film production.
Leslie, who herself identifies as a bisexual woman, couldn’t be more thrilled to take on the role of the crime fighting vigilante.
“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” said the Javicia Leslie in a statement announcing her involvement.
When season 2 makes its way onto the small screen, viewers will be intruded to Ryan Wilder (Leslie), who’s just about as far away from Kate Kane as you can get.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Wilder is “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed.”
She’s also spent a good chunk of her life working as a drug-runner and evading the GCPD.
“Today, Ryan lives in her van with her plant,” continues the official character synopsis per THR. “A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”
Batwoman season 2 is expected to premiere via The CW sometime in 2021.
