The final season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is almost upon us, and we have a little Chicago-inspired “Cell Block Tango” to look forward to!
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend season 3 finale spoilers ahead, read on at your own risk.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s third season ended on a pretty serious note with Rebecca making an intense, heartfelt confession in court. Rebecca, in an attempt to confess to all of the other wrongs she had committed against her loved ones, also had her sort of confessing to almost trying to kill her ex, Trent. The season ended with her being taken away to jail.

Now, as the show’s co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna explained to Entertainment Weekly, “It was a slightly misguided opportunity to take responsibility for everything by pleading guilty in a metaphysical sense. But they don’t put you in jail for very long for metaphysical crimes.”
So while Rebecca’s stay in prison won’t be long, she’s definitely making the most of her time there. Namely, by giving the audience the Chicago-inspired number they’ve been asking for since her incarceration–a song inspired by “Cell Block Tango” called “Everyone’s Got a Story.” And judging from the image released by EW, this song is going to be everything we hoped it could be.

It’s no secret that Rebecca is a huge musical theater nerd, and that she processes a lot of her life’s trauma through music with songs that often wink to famous musicals like the Les Mis-inspired “The Buzzing from the Bathroom” or the Music Man-inspired “Cold Shower.” So it only makes sense that she would process being in jail with a song like the “Cell Block Tango.”
After all, Rebecca isn’t really prepared for the reality of prison life, and as Rachel Bloom told Entertainment Weekly, “Rebecca herself is a musical-theater fangirl and goes into it with that mentality. I’m doing a high schooler performing their idea of ‘Cell Block Tango’.” Jack Dolgen, the show’s supervising producer and songwriter added, “It’s making fun of the fact that jail isn’t a sexy, romantic thing.”
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is certainly an expert in using song to poke fun at or highlight societal oddities and problematic issues, and “Everyone’s Got a Story” sounds like it will be a great take on a musical theater classic while also making the audience think. This final season is shaping up to be an amazing one with epic guest stars lined up and some truly fantastic music, and we can’t wait to see what this final adventure with Rebecca Bunch holds for us.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend returns to the CW for its last bow on October 12.
