UnREAL‘s Constance Zimmer is joining Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 in a role set to go toe-to-toe with Coulson.
Though Zimmer’s character has not yet been named, the part appears to be a significant one. The actress — recently known for her slippery turn in Lifetime’s breakout drama UnREAL — will play the head of an unspecified government agency that isn’t exactly thrilled with Coulson’s work at S.H.I.E.L.D.
As such, viewers can expect tensions to rise rapidly between Director Coulson and Zimmer’s character, who will appear in the premiere of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3. The specific point of contention appears to be Coulson’s pursuit of new Inhumans — something Zimmer’s character will be deeply interested in as well.
“We needed someone that could go toe-to-toe with Coulson,” said executive producer Jeph Loeb. “Constance brings a level of wit and spark to the role we could have only dreamed of, and we’re beyond excited to add her to our already stellar cast going into the new season.”
It seems likely that Zimmer’s character will be linked to Agent Banks, the role recently filled by Andrew Howard, who is also rumored to be in pursuit of Inhumans. Given the various factions seeking out powered people, it’s clear that the Terrigen-infused fish oil unleashed in the season 2 finale will have done serious work by the time we meet up again with our bruised and battered agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Less clear is whether or not the various factions seeking out the newborn Inhumans have any ties to Captain America: Civil War, Marvel’s next game-changing cinematic installment. Only time will tell, but given the implications of Ant-Man‘s ominous after-credits scene, it seems possible that these divisive events are coming to a head more quickly than anticipated.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has yet to announce the casting of further Inhumans in season 3, though such developments are undoubtedly on their way. In addition to Skye’s — sorry, Daisy Johnson’s — new Secret Warriors initiative, the Marvel villain Lash is also set to appear as a major Inhuman antagonist in the events to come.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 will premiere on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
