Coldplay has a new album coming out, Everyday Life, but the band won’t be touring right away while the band works to make a sustainable tour.
Coldplay has a new album called Everyday Life, and many fans were waiting on the announcement of a new tour to promote their work. However, in a pretty groundbreaking decision, the band has announced it will be putting tour plans on hold for a while
As Variety reports, the band doesn’t want to immediately set out on a global or national tour because of the impact a tour could have on the environment. So, for now, touring plans are on hold.
As Coldplay frontman Chris Martin explained in a statement to the BBC, they don’t just want their tour to be sustainable, but they’re even exploring ways to make a tour have a positive environmental impact, “We’re not touring this album. We’re taking time over the next year or two to work out how our tour can not only be sustainable [but] how can it be actively beneficial.”
Martin continued to express the struggle with creating a tour that had a more positive impact on the earth, and the various ways a tour can do real environmental damage, “The hardest thing is the flying side of things. But, for example, our dream is to have a show with no single-use plastic, to have it largely solar-powered.”
Ultimately, Martin said the band is asking a big question when it comes to tours: “How do we turn it around so it’s not so much taking as giving?”
Of course, that doesn’t mean the band isn’t doing anything to promote Everyday Life. The band plans to play two shows in Jordan to promote their new album.
But don’t worry, if you aren’t going to be able to see them live in Jordan, the show will be globally streamed for free on YouTube. The shows will take place at sunrise and sunset on Friday, November 22.
For a band with the reach of Coldplay to make such a bold choice in the name of the environment will certainly have a ripple effect throughout the music industry. We’ll have to watch and see how other artists respond to Coldplay’s actions, and the ways other musicians try to bring sustainability into touring life.
For now, you can listen to Everyday Life for yourself when the album releases on November 22.
