Claire Danes is heading to Apple TV for her next series starring role. Read up on who she’ll play in The Essex Serpent below!
Actress Claire Danes has officially joined the cast of the upcoming Apple TV+ original series, The Essex Serpent.
Based on author Sarah Perry’s 2016 book of the same name, The Essex Serpent is set in the 1893 Victorian era and centers on Cora— a widow who’s invigorated over finally being freed of her marriage with an abusive husband. Now freed from the confines of her abusive marriage, Cora opts to relocate, moving out of London and over to a small village in Essex called Aldwinter.
Once there, it’s not long before she finds herself becoming incredibly intrigued by a local legend that says that the small village might be haunted by a mythical sea creature known as the Essex Serpent.

Danes is set to star as Cora in the forthcoming adaptation. The Emmy Award winning actress takes over the role from Kiera Knightly, who was originally meant to star in the Apple TV+ original series.
According to Deadline, Kiera Knightly chose to back out of the project this past October as a result of the ongoing pandemic. Specifically, the outlet reports that Knightly, who is a mother of two, was “concerned over childcare during the pandemic.”
Behind the camera, The Essex Serpent is set to be directed by Clio Barnes (Dark River). Anna Symon will serve as writer on the series.
Apple has yet to announce when we might expect to see The Essex Serpent debut.
