The first trailer for Cinderella has been released starring Lily James and Helena Bonham Carter.
Disney’s latest live-action fairytale features Cinderella trying to find her way following the death of her mother and later her father. She’s assisted by her Fairy Godmother played by Bonham-Carter (isn’t it refreshing to see her dressed not like a crazy person?) as Cinderella’s step mother begins to ruin her life.
Cinderella looks like it’s going to be geared towards a young audience – at least, that’s what the trailer makes it seem like. The story fits in perfectly with Disney’s “believe in your dreams” motif.
In addition to the trailer, a new poster debuted today:
After getting such a tantalizing tease earlier this year (Disney knows how to put the tease in teaser trailer, that’s for sure), a full trailer is a welcome sight.
Cinderella stars Lily James as Ella, and that shortened name is enough to know that there will be some interesting twists on the classic tale, though none of them will be too drastic. Ella’s father will still remarry after the passing of Ella’s mother, and her stepmother will still show her evil side after Ella’s father passes. But Ella will stay true to her mother’s dying words of “have courage and be kind,” and won’t let her evil stepmother change her.
One of the reason’s we’re hopeful about Cinderella is its great supporting cast. Helena Bonham Carter would have been a great, albeit expected choice for the evil stepmother, but casting her as the fairy godmother was much less expected and far more interesting. Last year’s Oscar winner for Best Actress Cate Blanchett will star as the evil stepmother, and we can’t wait to see her sink her teeth into that role.
Other great casting choices include the lovely Hayley Atwell as Ella’s mother, Richard Madden as Prince Charming, Stellan Skarsgård as Grand Duke, and Ben Chaplin as Ella’s father.
Cinderella will be released on March 13, 2015 and is directed by Kenneth Branagh. The full synopsis is below:
“The story of ‘Cinderella’ follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden). Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham Carter) steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin and a few mice, changes Cinderella’s life forever.”
