Fun fact: The book is dedicated to Neil, Jo’s husband of 11 years.

The Casual Vacancy hits bookstores on Thursday, September 27. “The empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen,” the publisher says. “Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?”

The book is promoted as being “blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising.” The worldwide onsale time is technically 8 AM GMT/3 AM ET/12 AM PT on that day — unless, of course, you happen to find it somewhere else early. In the mean time, you can watch this interview with Rowling where she talks about the decision to write the book, if she’s read Fifty Shades of Grey, and what’s next in her writing career.

“This time I was on a plane,” she said when describing how she came up with the idea for this book. “And I thought: local election! And I just knew. I had that totally physical response you get to an idea that you know will work. It’s a rush of adrenaline, it’s chemical. I had it with Harry Potter and I had it with this.”
