Sure, Carol Danvers is cool — but Goose is the best Avenger of all, and we had better see more of her in Endgame.
Captain Marvel was a fun and inspirational movie of great historic importance for Marvel, and while I’ve written about how important this movie is for all of us, I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge what is possibly the coolest, fiercest and furriest addition to the Avengers: Goose, the cat (well, the Flerken).
We need more of Goose immediately. She is a badass and a hero and looks adorable when she’s curled up on a spaceship dashboard, and I want to both cuddle her repeatedly and have her beat up all my enemies with her crazy mouth-tentacles.
Carol Danvers may be wildly overpowered, but Goose shows just as much potential as she does for the future of the Avengers and the MCU. Admittedly, while watching the film my first thought was “Well, she’s a cat from the 90s so she’s probably not alive in the Avengers’ era,” but then the truth was revealed… and I don’t know how long the Flerken life expectancy is, but I think it’s quite plausible that she would still be alive. (If she didn’t get dusted by Thanos… as “all living creatures” included cats and Flerkens).
If Goose is still around, biding her time — or perhaps enjoying a happy retirement from S.H.I.E.L.D. full of tuna and treats — she, too, could join what’s left of the Avengers. After all, she’s been with S.H.I.E.L.D. the longest… and she’s capable of way more than the current Avengers: she swallowed the Tesseract!
Through her powers, Goose could open up an entire universe to the Avengers, where they could isolate enemies, store precious objects, or maybe even keep people safe. Even better, her humongous tentacles would be an excellent weapon to unleash upon unexpected enemies.
And it wouldn’t be weird at all to have a hero that looks like an animal join the crew — after all, we already have Rocket the Racoon. Why not Goose the Cat?
Plus, in Nick Fury’s absence, it’s entirely possible that Goose could provide some sort of wisdom she has absorbed over her years living in his office. She and Fury shared a powerful bond, which was only solidified by her violent attack on his eye, which practically made him into the man he is today.
We didn’t know it, but Goose defined the entire future of the MCU with one casual sweep of her paw. What can’t she do?
There aren’t enough cats represented in Hollywood, which often leaves cat people like me feeling sad. There are plenty of dogs in the MCU, because for some reason people tend to prefer main characters who are dogs, but very few cats: in fact the only cat I can think of is Murph from Delmar’s deli in Spiderman: Homecoming, and his role was very minimal.
Goose finally brings cats to the forefront of adventure, which is where they belong. And Goose is a cat in all ways — fierce, cuddly, loyal, but also ultimately unpredictable… a character all cat owners can feel for.
Of course, all credit goes to Reggie and the three other cats, Archie, Gonzo and Rizzo, that made Goose into the character she is through their amazing performances. It’s hard for a cat to pretend to be at zero gravity, or to pretend to have tentacles shooting out of its face.
Although it isn’t hard at all to look awesome and elegant when you’re a cat:
With Avengers: Endgame on the way, promising an epic finale to years of great cinema, Goose has a great chance of gracing us with a great return, and putting her paws to work in bringing down Thanos.
