In an interview promoting The Avengers: Age of Ultron Blu-ray release, Marvel President Kevin Feige reveals that Captain America: Civil War will act as the end of a trilogy, and talks about Thanos’ role in Infinity War.
As fans have expected, we might be looking at someone else taking up the mantle of Captain America after Civil War hits theaters. During a Q&A to promote Age of Ultron’s home release, MTV News asked Marvel President Kevin Feige about Civil War, where he revealed, “It’s very much, in a certain way, the completion of a Captain America trilogy.”
He later said, “I think one day you’ll look back and watch — Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War — and it’ll be one of the most unique and different trilogies ever around a single character.”
It seems that he looks at the three Captain America films as a trilogy, which may mean that Steve Rogers’ story simply changes, or could we even see him die? It’s unlikely considering we’re fairly certain Chris Evans has said that he’s involved in Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 & 2.
Speaking of Infinity War Part 1 & 2, Feige spoke to Slash Film about the Infinity Stones, saying, “You will see the other two, sometime in phase three for sure. There’s a gauntlet that needs to be filled.” We saw the Mind Stone in Age of Ultron, which was obtained by Ultron, but later infused into the head of The Vision. It’s incredibly powerful, and ended up making one of the best new characters in the franchise.
As for whether Marvel will be addressing the fact that Thanos has one Infinity Gauntlet, while Odin has another in his vault, he says it’s a great question and followed it up by saying, “Its not the same one.” Producer Jeremy Latcham then asked an interesting question: “Which one do you think is the real one?”
That’s a very fun question, as we’ve always assumed there were just two gauntlets, one for the left and right hand, but Latcham may have given away that there’s a fake one. Is the fake one in Odin’s vault or will Thanos be sorely disappointed when he puts all six Infinity Stones in his fake gauntlet we saw him put on in Age of Ultron’s after-credits scene?
Near the end of the interviews, Latcham revealed that Infinity War Part 2 will be the end of the Avengers as we know them. He says, “I think it definitely is an end to some version of the team that we’ve come to know as The Avengers. Who knows exactly what is going to happen yet in that film, but I think this version of that team — and I think we start to hint at it at the end of Age of Ultron — will be evolving.”
Will we be seeing some dead Avengers? We have to imagine the team will be shaken up quite a bit, but it’ll be interesting to see who is left standing. Captain America: Civil War will hit theaters May 6, 2016, with Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 hitting May 4, 2018.
