And apparently, he was very eager to do a remix specifically of the song “Champion”!
Funnily enough, RM must not have heard this particular story because he wasn’t really sure how they found out about him or BTS. He talked about the collaboration in a V Live and said, “I had a lot of fun from the collaboration. The lyrics are about the champion for those who couldn’t be a champion. Released: May 6, 2020
After IU approached Suga for a collaboration, they worked together on the lyrics and arrangement of the track. The lyrics touch on feelings of loss, memories, and youth.
IU discussed the song saying, “‘Eight’ is like a short novel of confession of my twenty-eight-year-old self to the fictional character ‘you’ using various metaphors. I’m not sure whether it comes from my personal feelings or from the general atmosphere of society that is enduring tough times together due to disasters, but my 28-year-old life is likely to be remembered as a recurring helplessness and fatigue, and a longing for the ‘Orange Island’ where ‘we’ were not sad and could be free.”
While Suga talked about the song in a VLive, “The production process was very smooth so there wasn’t a lot of back-and-forth. I wrote the beat and the melody came quickly after that. After I finished working on it, I listened to it a lot. After I finish working on a song, after it’s released, I don’t usually listen to it. Because I can only hear the things that I wish I could do better. The moment it leaves my hands, I think the song belongs to the listeners.”
A lot of fans have theorized that “eight” was inspired by Korean artists who have lost their lives at a young age, but neither IU nor Suga has confirmed that.

I’m grateful to have you on any song.” And he liked “Blueberry Eyes”. I’d already written the song, so I think that probably helped the message, because it was very clear that there was a sweet, loving, dream world to it.”
Max also revealed, “I didn’t give him any notes. I was just like, this is it. It was so cool to have another language and see the translation and be like, this is so romantic and beautiful and something different than I hear from him in most of his music. It was a new moment, and it was really special to have him do that on this song.”
