Fans were excited to hear last week that Bryan Cranston was reportedly in the running to play Lex Luthor in the Man of Steel sequel, but now the actor is denying the information.
A sketchy source reported on August 24 that Cranston was not only signed on for the role of Lex Luthor, but that he was set for “six” Man of Steel movies.
“Six?” Cranston responded when told the rumor by The Boston Globe over the weekend. “This is all news to me. I think that maybe my name is bandied about because I’m known to be bald. ‘What bald guy can we get?’ The reality is they can take any actor and shave his head or put a bald cap on him.”
The Globe kept pressing and asked if he would go to former Lex Luthor actor Gene Hackman for advice, but Cranston continued to deny that the rumors were accurate.
He did admit that, like any actor, he has some projects in the works. “I think I’ll relax the rest of the year. There’s some irons in the fire, things that people are talking about, but nothing is set,” he said.
Funnily enough, the actor was the first person to start the Lex Luthor rumors when he told a member of the press jokingly last month that he likes Lex. “I think he’s misunderstood. He’s a lovable, sweet man,” he said.
Anticipation surrounding the Man of Steel sequel has grown at a feverish pace over the past two months. Warner Bros. announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July that the follow-up would be a film pitting Batman VS. Superman. In August, the studio announced that Ben Affleck had signed on to play Batman, starring opposite Henry Cavill reprising his role as the red-caped hero.
The Man of Steel sequel rumored to be titled “Superman VS Batman” will open in theaters July 2015.
