Breaking Bad creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould are reminding fans how much they’d like to see Walt and Jesse pop up on the show’s spin-off, Better Call Saul.
Breaking Bad is celebrating its ten-year anniversary in style with huge spreads and Entertainment Weekly and a triumphant return to San Diego Comic Con. However, the show’s creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould aren’t just looking back fondly on Breaking Bad days; they’re also thinking about bridging the gap between Breaking Bad and its spin-off Better Call Saul.
While Better Call Saul is still set in the world of Breaking Bad (albeit a few years prior), the focus of the show feels unique and quite different from Breaking Bad. Still, characters have overlapped on the show, and Gilligan and Gould are very interested in bringing back two very important figures from Breaking Bad–Walter White and Jesse Pinkman.
Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard Gilligan mention this. Ever since Better Call Saul started on AMC, Gilligan and Walt and Jesse themselves, Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, have mentioned their interest in bringing Walt and Jesse back for quick appearances.
However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gilligan reiterated his desire to bring back the characters. As Gilligan explained to EW, “I desperately want to see both of them on Better Call Saul. Peter wants it, the writers do, the actors do.”
Of course, the big struggle in bringing back these characters is making their appearance on the show meaningful to Better Call Saul, and not cheap fan service. However, with the timelines of the two shows quickly converging (as well as the possibility of Jesse’s survival after the events of Breaking Bad), there are more and more opportunities to bring back the characters, if only briefly.
Though Bryan Cranston has floated a few walk-on cameo ideas, Gilligan wasn’t sure the fandom would go for it, explaining, “[I]t wouldn’t feel as satisfying if it was just a cameo or an Alfred Hitchcock walkthrough. I think we’ve waited long enough. We damn well better have a good reason for them to show up. I just hope we figure it out because I’ve got to hear, ‘Yeah, bitch!’ one more time.”
Gilligan and Gould have proven to be expert storytellers, and while we certainly trust their judgment, we can’t help hope right alongside Gilligan that we get to run into Jesse and Walt at least one more time on Better Call Saul.
