“Sorry Luigi” reads the official website’s message, almost as if they were dancing around the concept of Bowsette with the official Super Crown item description.
First discovered by a user on a ResetEra forum, the message displays on the official New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe website. To find it yourself, scroll down to the “Mushrooms and more” section and click on the “Super Crown” item. The message reads, “When Toadette finds one of these, she can transform into the super-powered Peachette. (Sorry Luigi-only Toadette can use this item!)”
The Bowsette meme surfaced quickly after the announcement of the Super Crown item for the re-release of New Super Mario Bros. U for the Nintendo Switch. The concept of “peach-ifying” other Mario characters took off, with Nintendo fans making (often lewd) fanart of characters such as Boo, Mario, and Thwomp in Super Crown form.
The meme took off in other factions of fandom, as characters from other Nintendo series, such as Metroid, were also envisioned as having used the Super Crown item. The Super Crown spread ever further, reaching into fan cosplays and My Little Pony transformations. It became the new Rule 34 for basically anything to ever exist, leading to some hilarious interpretations and jokes about the Super Mario Bros. series item.
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe features Toadette and the Super Crown as new content to the Nintendo Wii U port, along with all of the content present in the full game of New Super Luigi Bros. U. The game retails for $59.99, and releases exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on January 11, 2019.
