David Harbour has been cast in Marvel’s standalone Black Widow movie, and Rachel Weisz is reportedly in talks for a key role.
Update: Marvel has just announced another exciting new cast member joining the Black Widow standalone film. The Handmaid’s Tale O-T Fagbenle is reportedly joining in on the fun.
A report in Deadline says that Fagbenle isn’t just joining the cast, but that he is taking on a starring role opposite Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow. So if Fagbenle will be the film’s male lead, which has been reported to tell more of Nat’s origin story, who will he be?
It’s unclear at this point, as Marvel is unsurprisingly keeping many details under wraps. However, Nat does have an ex-husband in her past, one Alexi Shostakov. In a super brief explanation for those unfamiliar with the character, Shostakov was a famed test pilot for Russia who became an agent of the KGB, which ultimately resulted in him faking his death and losing contact with anyone from his past life–including his wife, Natasha.
Is Marvel bringing Fagbenle on board the film to incorporate this part of Nat’s past, or will he be playing another individual from her early days? Does he account for some of the infamous “red” in her ledger? Unfortunately, all we can do at this point is to wait and find out.
Production on the Black Widow standalone film begins in London this summer, so hopefully, more news about the film will be released around that time.
Original Story:
We all might be a bit distracted these days as we try to predict what heartbreak is headed our way in Avengers: Endgame. However, the MCU isn’t ending with Endgame, so we have a lot of great new movies to look forward to. Namely, the Black Widow standalone film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stranger Things’ own David Harbour has been cast to appear alongside Scarlett Johansson in the forthcoming flick. True to Marvel form, we don’t yet know who Harbour will play in the new movie.
And while Harbour’s appearance is confirmed, there is another exciting casting rumor circling. Rachel Weisz is said to be “circling” a key role in the Black Widow movie. As Variety reports, she is still in negotiations, but there is “strong interest from both sides of the negotiations.” It has also not been revealed who Weisz is in talks to play onscreen.
A Black Widow standalone movie is something fans have been asking Marvel to make for years. After her origin story was depicted in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it began to seem like a Black Widow movie would never happen. However, Marvel announced in 2018 that they were developing a Black Widow flick.
The film will be directed by Cate Shortland, and will use a script penned by Jac Schaeffer. As with other MCU films, Kevin Feige will serve as producer.
A Black Widow movie has truly been a long time coming for the MCU, and Natasha Romanoff is a really fascinating member of the Marvel world, both in film and comics form. We are so excited to see her take center stage in her own story.
There is no release date yet for the movie, but production is said to kick off in June. For now, you can catch Nat when she appears in Avengers: Endgame, opening in theaters everywhere on April 26.
