Billy Dee Williams is gearing up to step back into Land Calrissian’s shoes.
A source close to the project has revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that Williams, who originated the role of the fan favorite gambler, will officially be reprising his role as Lando in Star Wars: Episode IX.
The upcoming Star Wars movie serves as the highly anticipated follow up to this past December’s Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi. The film, which will be helmed by The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams will serve as the final installment to Lucasfilm’s latest space odyssey trilogy.
Most recently, Star Wars fans were offered a glimpse of young Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars spinoff flick, Solo: A Star Wars Story, which featured Donald Glover in the role of the charismatic gambler who first made his debut in 1983’s Empire Strikes Back.
Rumors that the actor would be appearing in the next installment of the franchise gained full steam over the past few days following Willams’ decision to pull out of an upcoming sci-fi and pop culture convention.
Williams reportedly had to back out of his appearance due to the convention dates conflicting with a movie schedule and it wasn’t long before fans started putting two and two together.
Currently, there aren’t too many details with regards to how big of a role Lando will play in the upcoming installment of franchise. As with other plot points, we’re sure the movie makers will be keeping details pretty close to the chest.
Like the rest of the Star Wars fandom, we’ll be looking forward to seeing how Han’s old friend plays into the fold of things. We’ll also be looking forward to seeing which of the new characters he ends up interacting with.
Episode IX, which stars returning cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver, is scheduled to hit theaters on December 20, 2019.
