Illumination released a new trailer for their upcoming holiday flick, The Grinch, and though it is a classic story, the team at Illumination have revamped the tale for new audiences.
While the first teaser trailer for 2018’s The Grinch seemed to be more of an animated spin on Jim Carrey’s 2000 live-action film than a new take on Dr. Suess’ classic holiday tale, this full-length trailer begs to differ. Illumination has put their very own spin on this timeless story of friendship, outcasts, anger, and holiday cheer, and it feels like a Grinch tale unlike any we’ve seen before.
This trailer does give us a super fast snapshot into the Grinch’s tragic backstory as a lonely orphan but quickly moves beyond that to show us his life as an adult. Using elaborate inventions to spy on (and complain about) the Whovians, he isn’t much of a menace to the folks of Whoville (with the exception of some juvenile grocery store antics) until he hatches his infamous plans to ruin the Whovian Christmas festivities. But even in that holiday festivities-destroying moment, he seems to be a more lovable and goofy version of the Grinch than other incarnations of the character.
Illumination has proved to be very capable when it comes to making lovable, redeemable “bad guys.” They first did this by introducing the super-villain turned adoptive father, Gru, in Despicable Me and the many sequels, so it’s no surprise that the studio latched on to one of the most infamous “mean ones” in The Grinch.
It will be interesting to see how kids react to this version of the story, and how it will compare to the classic cartoon or the Jim Carrey version. Either way, things are going to get a little nuts this holiday season when The Grinch releases in theaters on November 9.
