They may both be playing the same character in two competing adaptations of the Sherlock Holmes books, but the British actors have today received a joint nomination for the 2012 Olivier awards.

The two received the BEST ACTOR nomination for their work on the stage show Frankenstein, directed by Danny Boyle.  Cumberbatch and Miller both played Victor Frankenstein and The Creature on alternative nights of the production.  The show also received nominations for BEST SOUND DESIGN and BEST LIGHTING DESIGN.

Cumberbatch is best known for playing the titular role in the popular detective series Sherlock. Miller is set to play the same character in Elementary, an American retelling of the stories set in New York City. Both shows producers have recently been at loggerheads, after the production company behind Sherlock threatened legal action against Elementary over apparent similarities.

You can read the full list of nominations here, which also includes a BEST ACTOR IN A MUSICAL nomination for Berty Carvel – who notably played Sebatsien Wilkes in 2×01 of Sherlock.

Did you manage to see the actors in Frankenstein? Do you think the joint nomination will add fuel to the fire of comparisons between Sherlock and Elementary? Sound off in the comments below!
